앙골라 내전은 앙골라 인민 해방 운동(MPLA)과 앙골라 완전 독립 민족 동맹(UNITA), 앙골라 해방 민족 전선(FNLA)간의 게릴라전으로 시작되었다.
역사
포르투갈령(領) 앙골라에서는 마르크스주의 성향의 앙골라 해방인민운동(MPLA), 반공(反共)파인 앙골라 해방민족전선(FNLA), 앙골라 완전 독립 민족 동맹(UNITA)의 3개 조직이 대립하면서 대(對)포르투갈 무장투쟁을 전개해왔다.
1974년 4월 포르투갈 본국의 정변(政變)으로 새로 들어선 정부가, 식민지에 독립을 부여한다는 성명을 발표한 뒤에도 대립은 계속되어 오다가 1975년 1월 케냐의 조정으로 3자가 단합하여 포르투갈과 독립 협정을 체결, 잠정정부를 발족시켰다.
그러나 3월에는 MPLA와 FNLA 사이에, 5월에는 MPLA와 UNITA 사이에 전투가 시작되었고, 8월 이후는 MPLA 대 FNLA·UNITA 연합 세력의 형태로 재전이 격화하였다. 처음에는 소련·동유럽 국가들의 원조를 받은 MPLA가 미국·중화인민공화국의 원조를 받은 연합 세력을 압도하였으나, 10월 말 남아프리카 공화국 군대의 개입으로 형세는 역전되었다. 그러나 11월 초부터 쿠바군의 투입과, 소련의 무기원조 확대로 형세는 다시 역전, 1976년 2월에는 MPLA의 승리가 확정되었다.
한편, 내전 중에 MPLA는 앙골라 인민 공화국을, 연합 세력은 앙골라 민주주의 인민 공화국을 선언하였는데, 내전이 종결된 직후 인민공화국의 정통성이 아프리카통일기구(OAU)에 의하여 인정되었다.
국제연합의 중재로 1991년에 휴전협정을 맺고, 1992년에는 선거를 치렀으나 UNITA이 선거 결과를 인정치 않아 다시 내전에 돌입했고, 2002년 UNITA의 지도자 조나스 사빔비가 목시코 지방에서 정부군과 교전 중 전사하고 나서야 반군 5만 명이 해체되고 나서야 완전히 멈추었다.
