카라칼(caracal)은 서남아시아, 남아시아, 아프리카에 걸쳐 서식하는 고양이과에 속하는 동물이다. 카라칼이라는 낱말은 검은 귀를 뜻하는 터키어 낱말 karakulak에서 온 것이다.[2] 이 동물은 독일의 자연학자 요한 크리스티안 다니엘 폰 슈레버(Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber, 1739년~1810년)가 1776년 케이프타운의 테이블 산의 표본을 그리고 기술함으로써 서양 과학에 처음 알려지기 시작했다.[3]
