하르키우(하리코프) 대학교를 졸업한 후 원형질을 연구하기 위하여 독일 뷔르츠부르크 대학교에 입학하였다. 1870년 오데사 대학교 교수를 거쳐, 1888년에는 프랑스 파스퇴르 연구소에 들어가 루이 파스퇴르 밑에서 세균학과 면역학을 연구하다가 백혈구의 식균 작용과 면역과의 관계를 발견하였다. 또한 인간의 노화 현상을 연구하여 유산균을 섭취하면 노화를 방지할 수 있다고 주장하였다. 1908년 파울 에를리히와 함께 노벨 생리학·의학상을 받았다. 또한 그의 이름을 딴 유제품이 한국야쿠르트에서 판매되고 있다.
