도리스 레싱

도리스 레싱(Doris Lessing, 1919년 10월 22일 ~ )은 영국 작가로, 2007년 노벨 문학상 수상자이다. 본명은 도리스 메이 테일러(Doris May Tayler)이다.

1919년 이란의 케르만샤에서 태어났다. 레싱의 가족은 1925년, 영국 식민지인 남부 로디지아(지금의 짐바브웨)로 이사해 옥수수 농장을 했다. 하지만 땅을 가꾸는 것이 쉽지만은 않았다. 가족이 가톨릭 신자는 아니었으나, 레싱은 로마 가톨릭의 여학교를 다녔다. 15살 이후는 학교를 떠나 독학을 했다.

이런 어렵고 고된 유년기에도 불구하고, 레싱의 작품에서 그려진 영국령 아프리카의 삶은 식민지 영국인의 메마른 삶과 원주민의 어려운 삶에 대한 연민으로 채워져 있다.

도리스 레싱은 두 차례 결혼하고 두 차례 이혼했으며, 세 명의 자녀를 두었다. 찰스 위즈덤(Chales Wisdom)과의 첫 결혼 생활은 1939년부터 1943년까지 이어졌다. 후에 동독의 우간다 대사를 지내기도 한 고트프리트 레싱(Gottfried Lessing)과의 결혼 생활은 1945년부터 1949년까지 이어졌다.

첫 소설인 《풀잎은 노래한다》(The Grass Is Singing)는 1949년 런던에서 처음 발표되었다.

데임 작위(영국에서 여성한테 주는 기사 작위)는 거부하였으나 명예훈작사는 받아들였다.

2007년 노벨 문학상 수상자로 결정되었다. 역대 수상자 중 최고령.
