살찐꼬리쇠주머니쥐는 주머니쥐과에 속하는 살찐꼬리쇠주머니쥐속(Thylamys) 유대류의 총칭이다. 앞위턱뼈는 뾰족하기보다는 둥글다. 암컷은 배쪽에 젖꼭지 두 줄이 대칭을 이루어 나 있으며,[2] 파라과이살찐꼬리쇠주머니쥐(T. macrurus)를 제외하고 모든 종이 꼬리 부위에 지방을 저장한다.[3][4]
