멜라노케투스속(Melanocetus)은 아귀목에 속하는 조기어류 물고기 속의 하나이다.^[1] 멜라노케투스과(Melanocetidae)가 유일속이다. 대서양과 인도양 그리고 1종이 발견되는 로스해를 포함하여 태평양의 열대와 온대 수역에서 발견된다. 학명은 "검다"라는 의미의 그리스어 "멜라노스"(melamos)와 "고래" 또는 "바다 괴물"을 의미하는 "케투스"(cetus)의 합성어에서 유래했다. 험프백아귀(Melanocetus johnsonii)는 1995년 8월 14일자 타임지 커버스토리에 등장한 바 있다.^[2]
