처녀막

처녀막(處女膜)은 자궁 내막의 일종으로 질을 막거나 부분적으로 덮는 막을 말한다. 여성의 외성기인 보지의 일부를 이룬다.[1][2] 가장 흔한 처녀막의 모양은 초승달 모양이며, 다른 모양도 많다.[3] 출산 이후 사라지지만, 일부가 남아 있을 수 있으며 carunculae myrtiformes이라고 부른다.[4]

처녀막은 해부학적인 기능이 없는 것으로 알려져 있다. 순결을 중요시하는 사회에서는 처녀성을 판단하는 기준으로 믿어 왔다. 그러나 처녀막을 검사한다고 해서 여성이 처녀라는 것을 확신할 수는 없다.[5] 왜냐하면 사춘기에 이르러 자위 행위 등으로 처녀막이 없어질 수도 있거나, 승마나 운동으로 손상될 수 있고, 아예 태어날 때부터 없는 사람도 많기 때문이다. 강간이나 성적 학대가 의심될 때는 처녀막을 자세히 검사하기도 하지만, 처녀막만으로는 결론을 내릴 수 없다.[6]

보통 처녀막은 운동을 하거나 탐폰을 쓰거나 골반 검사, 심지어는 가랑이를 찢다가(스트레칭) 다치더라도 상할 수 있다.[7]

소녀가 사춘기에 이르면, 처녀막은 탄력성을 갖게 된다. 처녀막을 검사함으로써 여성이 탐폰을 쓰는지 알아낼 수는 없다. 또한 약 43%만이 처음 성교 시 피를 흘리며, 이는 57%의 여성의 처녀막은 늘어날 뿐 찢어지지는 않는다는 것이다.[8]
