캐서린 차이 타이(Katherine Chi Tai) 또는 캐서린 타이(Katherine Tai)는 1974년 3월 18일생으로[1][2] 미국의 제19대 무역대표부 대표로, 바이든 행정부 내 대중 강경파로 명성이 높다.

생애[편집]

1974년 3월 18일 미국 코네티컷주에서 대만 외성인(Waishengren, 外省人, 한어 병음 wàishěngrén '와이셩런'으로 발음) 출신 이민자의 딸로 태어났다[3][4]. 이후 워싱턴 DC에서 자랐으며, Sidwell Friends School을 졸업하였다[5]. 이후 예일 대학교 사학과에서 문학사 학위를 취득하였으며[6], 2001년에는 하버드 대학교 법학전문대학원(Law School)에서 법무박사 학위(Juris Doctor)를 취득하였다[7][8].

1996년부터 1998년까지는 Yale-China Fellow로 중공의 중산대학에서 교양 영어를 강의하였다[9][10].

하버드 대학교 법학전문대학원에서 법무박사 학위를 취득하고 변호사 자격증을 취득한 이후 Powell Goldstein, Sidley Austin, 베이커 맥킨지, Miller & Chevalier 등 여러 로펌에서 근무하였으며 워싱턴 DC 및 메릴랜드주의 지방 법원에서 서기로 근무하였다[11][12].

2007년부터 2014년까지 타이는 미국 무역대표부 법률 고문실에서 근무하였으며, 그 곳에서 세계무역기구(WTO)의 무역 사건을 책임졌다[13]. 2014년에는 미국 하원 세입위원회의 무역 고문이 되었으며, 2017년에는 최고 무역 고문으로 임명되었다[14]. 이 시기에 본인의 대중 강경파 성향이 두드러지기 시작했다.

2021년 3월 18일 제19대 미국 무역대표부 대표로 취임하였다[15]. 미국의 역대 무역대표부 대표 중에서는 최초로 아시아계가 대표로 선임된 것이다[16]. 이후 바이든 행정부의 대중 강경파 성향[17][18]과 본인의 대중 강경파 성향이 3박자를 맞추어 김정은과 시진핑의 도발에 강경 대응하고 있다.
