에테멘앙키

에테멘앙키(수메르어: 𒂍𒋼𒀭𒆠 É.TEMEN.AN.KI "하늘과 땅의 기초가 되는 신전")는 메소포타미아의 주신 중 하나인 마르두크에게 헌정된 고대 바빌론의 지구라트였다. 오늘날 이라크 바그다드의 남쪽으로부터 90 킬로미터 (56 mi) 떨어진 곳에 폐허로 남아있다.

에테멘앙키는 때때로 성서의 창세기 11장에 등장하는 바벨탑 이야기 속 바벨탑과 동일시되지만, 고고학적 기록은 특히 에테멘앙키가 마르두크 신에게 경의를 표하기 위해 세워졌고, 에테멘앙키가 세워지기도 훨씬 이전부터 메소포타미아 지역에 많은 언어가 존재했기 때문에 바벨탑에 대한 성경 설명과 양립할 수 없음을 보여준다. 그러나 많은 학자들은 성경의 이야기가 적어도 부분적으로는 에테멘앙키에서 영감을 받았다고 믿는다.

나보폴라사르의 비문이 새겨진 실린더(원통형 비문)는 1880년대에 발견되었으며, 2개가 남아 있으며 그 중 하나는 다음과 같다.

나의 날들이 이미 약해지고 심하게 휘었을 적에, 그때에 나의 주 마르두크가 에-테멘-앙-키, 곧 바빌론의 지구라트에 대하여 말씀하시었노라, 그 기반은 사후세계의 가슴에 닿고 그 끝은 하늘과 겨룰 정도의 탑에 관해서.

At that time my lord Marduk told me in regard to E-temen-anki, the ziqqurrat of Babylon, which before my day was (already) very weak and badly buckled, to ground its bottom on the breast of the netherworld, to make its top vie with the heavens.

나는 상아, 흑단, 무수-칸누 나무를 깎아 곡괭이와 삽, 벽돌 틀을 만들어 내 땅에서 끌어온 수많은 인부들의 손에 맡기었노라. I fashioned mattocks, spades and brick-moulds from ivory, ebony, and musukkannu-wood, and set them in the hands of a vast workforce levied from my land.

무수한 진흙 벽돌들을 빚어 그 형상을 만들었고 이를 빗방울처럼 많은 벽돌들을 구워 빚었노라. I had them shape mud bricks without number and mould-baked bricks like countless raindrops.

나는 아라투 강에 거대한 홍수처럼 많은 아스팔트와 역청을 지게 하였노라. I had the River Arahtu bear asphalt and bitumen like a mighty flood.

에아의 총명함으로, 마르두크의 지혜로, 나부와 니사바의 지성으로, 나를 창조하신 신께서 주신 광대한 마음으로, 나는 나의 위대한 이성으로 숙고하였노라. Through the sagacity of Ea, through the intelligence of Marduk, through the wisdom of Nabû and Nissaba, by means of the vast mind that the god who created me let me possess, I deliberated with my great intellect,

나는 가장 현명한 전문가들과 토론했고 측량사는 12규빗을 기준으로 치수를 정하였노라. I commissioned the wisest experts and the surveyor established the dimensions with the twelve-cubit rule.

장인들은 줄을 팽팽히 당기고 그 한계를 정하였노라. The master-builders drew taut the measuring cords, they determined the limits.

나는 샤마쉬, 아다드, 그리고 마르두크와 상의해 그 동의를 구하였고 내 마음이 의심을 숙고할 때마다 위대한 신들께서 신탁을 통하여 진실을 나에게 알려주셨노라. I sought confirmation by consulting Samas, Adad and Marduk and, whenever my mind deliberated (and) I pondered (unsure of) the dimensions, the great gods made (the truth) known to me by the procedure of (oracular) confirmation.

에아와 마르두크의 지혜로 나는 이 곳을 정화하고 고대의 기반 위에 새로운 기반을 견고히 하였노라. Through the craft of exorcism, the wisdom of Ea and Marduk, I purified that place and made firm its foundation platform on its ancient base.

그 기초에는 금과 은과 산과 바다의 보석을 두었노라. In its foundations I laid out gold, silver, gemstones from mountain and sea.

벽돌들 아래에 나는 반짝이는 사프수, 달콤한 향이 나는 기름, 향수와 붉은 흙을 쌓았노라. Under the brickwork, I set heaps of shining sapsu, sweet-scented oil, aromatics and red earth.

나는 흙바구니를 진 나의 형상을 빚어 기단 아래 여럿을 두었노라. I fashioned representations of my royal likeness bearing a soil-basket and positioned (them) variously in the foundation platform.

내가 곧 나의 주 마르두크 앞에 고개를 숙이니, 내가 곧 나의 옷 왕의 예복을 말아 머리에 벽돌과 흙을 짊어졌노라. I bowed my neck to my lord Marduk. I rolled up my garment, my kingly robe, and carried on my head bricks and earth (i.e. mud bricks).

나는 금과 은으로 만든 흙바구니를 날랐고 내 마음이 사랑하는 장자 네부카드네자르에게 포도주, 기름, 수지 조각이 섞인 흙을 인부들과 함께 나르도록 시켰노라. I had soil-baskets made of gold and silver and made Nebuchadnezzar, my firstborn son, beloved of my heart, carry alongside my workmen earth mixed with wine, oil and resin-chips.

나는 그의 형제이자 나의 혈통인 나부시밀리시르, 나의 사랑하는 아들에게 곡괭이와 삽을 집어들게 하였노라. I made Nabûsumilisir, his brother, a boy, issue of my body, my darling younger son, take up mattock and spade.

나는 그에게 금과 은으로 만든 흙바구니를 짊어지게 하였고 그를 나의 주 마르두크에게 선물로 바쳤노라. I burdened him with a soil-basket of gold and silver and bestowed him on my lord Marduk as a gift.

나는 건물을 지었노라, 즐거움과 환희에 가득찬 에-사라의 형상을 그대로 닮은, 그 끝을 산처럼 높이 올린 건물을. I constructed the building, the replica of E-sarra, in joy and jubilation and raised its top as high as a mountain.

나는 내가 이전에 그래왔던 것과 같이 나의 주 마르두크를 위하여 그 경이에 걸맞은 건물을 지었노라. For my lord Marduk I made it an object fitting for wonder, just as it was in former times.

매체에서는 에테멘앙키의 건설에 대한 기록에 바벨탑 이야기를 연상케하는 언어의 혼란이 언급되었다고 하는데, 이는 1800년대의 율리우스 오페르트의 번역을 근거로 하는 것이며, 그가 번역한 보르시파 비문은 바빌론의 에테멘앙키가 아니라 보르시파라는 전혀 다른 도시의 지구라트에 대한 것으로, 그의 번역에서도 보르시파의 건축물(E-UR-ME-IMIN-ANKI)로 언급된다. 매체에서 알려진 것과 다르게 해당 기록은 에테멘앙키와는 무관한 것이다. 또한, 오페르트의 번역은 현대에는 받아들여지지 않고 있으며, 비문에 대한 올바른 번역에는 언어의 혼란에 대한 언급조차 없기에 언어의 혼란이 토판에 기록되었다는 것은 번역 오류로부터 파생된 오해이다. 오히려, <바벨탑 석비 Tower of Babel Stele>로 알려진 네부카드네자르 2세의 비문에 다음과 같은 내용 곧 지구라트의 건축을 위해 세계 각국의 사람들을 모아 건축에 동원시키는 내용이 등장하는 것을 근거로, 유수기 동안 당시 근동 여러 국가의 사람들과 함께 에테멘앙키 건축에 동원된 유대인들이 현장에서 사람들이 사용하는 언어가 제각기 달라 온갖 언어를 사용하였기 때문에 여러 혼란을 마주했고, 이로부터 바벨탑 이야기가 파생되었다고 보는 것이 주류이다.

<바벨탑 석비>의 내용은 다음과 같다:

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon am I - In order to complete E-TEMEN-ANKI and E-UR-ME-IMIN-ANKI I mobilized all countries everywhere, each and every ruler who had been raised to prominence over all the people of the world - loved by Marduk, from the upper sea to the lower sea, the distant nations, the teeming people of the world, kings of remote mountains and far-flung islands - The base I filled in to make a high terrace. I built their structures with bitumen and baked brick throughout. I completed it raising its top to the heaven, making it gleam bright as the sun.
