프랑크 쉐퍼
프랭크 쉐퍼 (Frank Schaeffer, 1952년 8월 3일 ~ )는 미국 작가 , 영화 감독 , 시나리오 작가 , 그리고 대중 연설가이다. 그는 신학자 프란시스 쉐퍼와 에디스 쉐퍼의 아들이다. 그는 할리우드 영화 감독이자 작가가 되었으며 포르토피노 , 체르마트 , 할머니를 구하기 등 엄격한 복음주의 가정에서의 삶을 묘사한 국제적으로 찬사를 받은 소설을 썼다.
그는 젊은 시절에 보수적이고 근본주의적인 기독교인 이었지만 그의 견해를 바꾸어 자유주의적 민주당원과 자칭 '기독교 무신론자'가 되었다. 그는 보스턴 북쪽에 살고 있으며, 같은 지역 그리스 동방 정교회에 출석하고 있다.

그는 그의 저서 "왜 나는 하나님을 믿는 무신론자인가"에서 근본주의의 문제를 파헤치면서도 무신론자가 아닌 이유를 밝혔다. 그는 자신의 부친인 프란시스 쉐퍼와 함께 백악관을 드나들면서 살아왔던 행적을 경험하며 자신의 가정에 경솔했던 자신의 생활을 후회하였다고 자백하였다. 그는 미국 기독교 내에 잔재한 네포티즘을 폭로하며 기독교가 전근대적인 사고 방식을 갖고 있으며 그곳에서 탈피하여 사는 자신의 삶을 공개하였다. 하지만 크리스토퍼 히친스와의 주고 받은 이메일에서 그가 왜 무신론자가 아닌지도 설명하였다. 그는 기독교인도 아니고 무신론자도 아닌, 중간자적 평범한 한 인간으로써의 삶을 갈망하였다.
평가[편집]
오스 기니스는 라브리공동체에서 강연을 하였을 때를 떠올리며, 프랑크 쉐퍼는 항상 불만을 갖고 있는 성격을 갖고 있었고, "사랑은 허다한 죄를 덮느니라" 와 " 은혜를 통한 구원"을 말하며 그의 부모도 또한 우리와 같은 평범한 자들임을 인정해야 한다고 주장하였다.[1]
