컬링이란 단어는 스코틀랜드의 퍼스(perth)시에서 1620년에 인쇄된 헨리 아담슨이 쓴 시에 처음으로 증장한다.[1][2] 컬링 스포츠는(지금도 여전히 스코틀랜드와 스코틀랜드인이 정착한 뉴질랜드 남부 등지에서) "포효하는 게임"으로 알려져 있다. 그 이유는 페불(경기장 표면에 입힌 물방울)을 따라 진행하는 과정에서 스톤이 발생시키는 소리때문이다.[3] 동명사 컬링은 스톤의 움직임을 묘사하는 스코트어(와 영어) 동사 컬(curl)에서 형성되었다.[4] 단어 컬은 스톤의 움직임을 묘사한다.
