Dong-shin Bae[편집]

배동신(裵東信 1920~2008) Korean Artist Watercolor.

Born in Korea on June 16, 1920. In 1937 he went to Japan to study art. In 1943, he graduated from the Department of Western Painting, Kawabata Art School[1] in Japan. In 1943, he became a member of the Japan Free Artists Association. He returned home. And settled in Naju, Jeollanam-do. He opened his first solo exhibition in Gwangju in 1947. In 1950, the Korean War broke out. In 1964, 1967, and 1969, he held a solo exhibition of watercolors in Jeolla-do. Dong-shin Bae held 26 solo exhibitions in his life. He held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Tokyo and Osaka, Japan. In 1968, he became the first president of the Association of Watercolor Artists. In 1970, he created an art group called "Hwangtohoe" with Ji-ho Oh, Chul-gyo Park, Yeon-gyun Kang, Je-gil Woo, Young-tae Kim, Yong-gap Cho, In-gyu Kim, Dong-moon Kang, and Soo-ho Kim, and others. In 1975, he served as the first president of the Korean Watercolor Association. Since 1973, it has been invited to the Korean National Museum of Modern Art every year. In 1996, an exhibition was held in his hometown, Gwangju, to commemorate Bae Dong-shin's 60 years of watercolor painting. He was awarded the Korean Culture Medal in 2000.
