“Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo”라는 문장은 동음이의어를 사용한 문장이다. 비슷한 예로 《시씨식사사》나 영어 속담 중 하나인 “Don't trouble trouble until trouble troubles you”등이 있다.
문장의 구조[편집]
이 문장에는 3가지 다른 buffalo라는 단어가 사용되었다. 아래에 먼저 쓰인 것부터 설명하겠다.
- 뉴욕 주 버펄로 시 또는 다른 지명인 버펄로)이다. 형용사처럼 쓰여 아래 2번 버펄로가 버펄로에 산다는 의미로 쓰인다.
- 동물의 하나인 버펄로. 복수형은 buffalo 또는 buffaloes이다.
- buffalo는 타동사로 쓰여 괴롭히다, 혼란하게 하다, 속이다, 위협하다 등의 뜻을 가진다.
위 보기를 각 buffalo에 표시하면 다음과 같다.
- Buffalo¹ buffalo² Buffalo¹ buffalo² buffalo³ buffalo³ Buffalo¹ buffalo².
이렇게 하면 다음과 같이 해석할 수 있다. (1번은 “버펄로 시”, 2번은 “물소”, 3번은 “위협하다”로)

Buffalo is not the only word in English for which this kind of sentence can be constructed; any word which is both a plural noun and a plural form of a transitive verb will do. Other examples include fish, smelt, bream, and cod.
