모랑 솔니에 D-3801 (GC LaFayette)

모랑 솔니에 M.S.406(Morane-Saulnier M.S.406)은 1938년부터 모랑 솔니에가 개발 및 제조한 프랑스 전투기이다. 이 전투기는 제2차 세계 대전 중 프랑스에서 가장 많은 전투기였으며 숫자가 1,000대를 초과한 단 두 대의 프랑스 설계 중 하나였다. 전쟁이 시작될 당시 이 항공기는 400km/h(250mph)의 속도를 낼 수 있는 단 두 대의 프랑스제 항공기 중 하나였으며 다른 하나는 포테즈 630이었다.[1]

1934년 프랑스 공군이 발행한 전투기에 대한 요구 사항에 대응하여 모랑 솔니에는 혼합 재료로 MS.405로 지정된 프로토타입을 제작했다. 이것은 회사 최초의 저익 단엽기일 뿐만 아니라 밀폐된 조종석을 특징으로 하는 최초의 비행기이자 접이식 차대를 갖춘 최초의 디자인이라는 특징을 가졌다. 1939년 초 프랑스 공군에 M.S.406이 투입되면서 프랑스 공군이 채택한 최초의 현대식 전투기가 탄생했다.[2] 견고하고 기동성이 뛰어난 전투기임에도 불구하고 동시대 전투기에 비해 힘이 약하고 무장도 약한 것으로 간주되었으며 프랑스 전투 중 M.S.406은 메서슈미트 Bf 109E보다 성능이 뛰어났다.

이 유형은 1939년 9월부터 1940년 5월 10일까지 소위 음가짜 전쟁 동안 자체적으로 유지될 수 있었다. 1940년 5월 프랑스 침공 당시 약 400명의 모란이 손실되었다. 이 중 약 150대가 적군 전투기와 지상 사격으로 손실되었고, 또 다른 100대가 적의 공습으로 지상에서 파괴되었다. 나머지는 전투기가 독일의 손에 넘어가는 것을 방지하기 위해 프랑스 군인에 의해 의도적으로 파괴되었다. 프랑스 M.S.406 편대는 191번의 확인된 승리와 83번의 예상 승리를 달성했다.[3] 이 유형의 한정 생산은 1940년 6월 22일 휴전 이후 독일 감독 하에 프랑스에서 한동안 계속되었다.

M.S.406은 다양한 고객에게 수출되었다. 폴란드가 주문한 160대의 항공기 중 전쟁이 발발하기 전에는 폴란드 영토에 도달한 항공기가 없었으며, 첫 번째 화물은 1939년 8월 29일에 발송되었다.[4][5] 특히 주목할만한 점은 핀란드와 스위스 공군이 이 항공기를 운용했다는 것이다. 두 운영자 모두 핀란드 뫼르쾨-모란(Mörkö-Morane)[6]과 같은 M.S.406의 고유 파생형을 개발하기로 결정했다. 전쟁이 끝날 무렵 M.S.406과 그 파생형의 대부분은 전투기 기술의 급속한 발전으로 인해 더 이상 사용되지 않게 되었다. 최종 사용은 1952년에 해당 유형의 마지막 사례가 폐기되기 전에 핀란드에서 고급 훈련기로 사용되었다.
