《Greatest Hits – Volume I & Volume II》는 1985년에 발매된 미국의 싱어송라이터 빌리 조엘의 첫 번째 베스트 음반이다. 〈You're Only Human (Second Wind)〉와 〈The Night Is Still Young〉 등 이전에 다른 음반에 수록되지 않았던 신곡이 본 컴필레이션 음반에 수록되었다. 수록곡들은 빌리 조엘의 히트한 싱글 곡으로 구성되어 있으며, 트랙은 발매된 순서대로 수록되어있다.

이 음반은 2300만 장가량 판매되었고, RIAA로부터 더블 다이아몬드 인증을 받았다. 핑크 플로이드의 《The Wall》, 레드 제플린의 《Led Zeppelin IV》와 함께 미국에서 역대 세 번째로 가장 높게 인증 받은 음반 중 하나이다.[4]

이 음반에는 1973년부터 1985년까지의 히트곡들이 발매된 순서로 수록되어 있다. 일부 음반에는 〈Honesty〉대신 〈Don't Ask Me Why〉가 수록되었다. 두 개의 미발매 신곡 〈You're Only Human (Second Wind)〉과 〈The Night Is Still Young〉도 새로 수록되었다. 두 곡은 싱글로도 발매되었고, 1989년에는 (〈Honesty〉를 포함한) 《Greatest Hits – Volume I & Volume II》의 전 곡이 수록된 박스 세트 《Souvenir: The Ultimate Collection》에도 수록되었다.[5] 〈You're Only Human (Second Wind)〉는 이후 2000년에 발매된 컴필레이션 음반 《The Ultimate Collection》과, 2011년 발매된 박스 세트 《The Complete Albums Collection》의 15번 디스크 《Collected Additional Masters》에도 수록되었다. 〈The Night Is Still Young〉 역시 같은 디스크 15에 수록됐다.

CD는 총 세 가지 버전이 존재한다. 1985년 초 발매판에는 〈Honesty〉가 디스크 2 세 번째 트랙으로 수록되었고, 2차 발매판에서는 〈Don't Ask Me Why〉가 세 번째 트랙으로, 1998년 발매된 리마스터 판은 〈Don't Ask Me Why〉가 디스크 2의 다섯 번째 트랙으로 수록되었다. 하지만 〈Honesty〉가 수록된 디스크에는 〈Don't Ask Me Why〉가 수록되지 않았고, 그 반대의 경우도 있다.[7]

1985년 오리지널 발매판에서는 다섯 곡의 재생 시간이 원곡보다 짧게 편집되어 수록되었다. 〈Just the Way You Are〉의 재생 시간은 3분 34초로 원곡보다 1½분 짧게 편집됐고, 2절("Don't go trying some new fashion"에서 "I want you just the way you are"까지)이 완전히 생략됐다. 또한 색소폰 솔로가 원곡보다 일찍 페이드아웃 된다. 〈My Life〉의 재생 시간은 3분 50초로 원곡에 비해 1분에 가깝게 단축되었다. 도입부의 피아노 전주에서 25초가 생략됐고, 1절과 2절 사이에 연주되는 전주와 같은 연주도 생략됐다. "You wake up with yourself" 이후 피아노 연주도 절반이 단축됐고, "But not on my time" 이후 연주되는 피아노 솔로는 완전히 생략됐다. 〈Big Shot〉의 재생 시간은 3분 43초로, "big shot… wow"로 끝나는 후반부의 시간이 약 ½분 단축되었다. 〈Pressure〉의 재생 시간은 3분 13초로, 원곡보다 약 1½분 단축되었고, 한 절 이상("I'll tell you what it means"에서 "I read it too, what does it mean?" 까지) 생략되었다. 〈Tell Her About It〉의 재생 시간은 3분 33초로 끝에 약 20초 정도 빨리 페이드아웃 되어 일부 가사가 생략되었다.[8]

1998년 발매된 2-CD 세트는 디지털 리마스터되었고 디스크 1에 두 개의 보너스 비디오(〈You're Only Human (Second Wind)〉과 〈The Night Is Still Young〉)가 포함되었다. 1985년 발매판에서 재생 시간이 단축되었던 곡(〈Pressure〉, 〈My Life〉, 〈Big Shot〉, 〈Just the Way You Are〉, 〈Tell Her About It〉)들은 모두 원곡의 길이로 복원되었다. 또한, 〈Say Goodbye to Hollywood〉의 라이브 버전이 《Turnstiles》에 수록된 스튜디오 버전으로 바뀌었다.

3-디스크 컴필레이션의 일부 한정판 《The Greatest Hits Collection, Volumes I, II & III》는 1998년에 발매되어 세계 투어와 함께했다.[8]
