불가르 족은 중앙 아시아에서 기원한 반 유목민족으로 캅카스 북쪽의 스텝 지방과 볼가 강 연안에서 2세기경 유럽으로 이주한 민족을 말한다. 이들은 유럽으로 이주하여 비잔티움 제국과 경쟁하며 현재의 불가리아에 정착하였고 불가리아인의 원형으로 여겨진다.
