주 달려 죽은 십자가

산드로 보티첼리의 그림 "Christ Carrying the Cross"(1490~91년)

주 달려 죽은 십자가(When I Survey the Wondrous Cross)라는 찬송은 아이작 와츠가 작사하였고, 1707년에 "Hymns and Spiritual Songs"에 출판되었다. 이 찬송은 성경 본문만을 바꾸어 표현한 초기 영어 찬송 스타일에서 혁신적으로 출발했다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 두 번째 절은 갈라디아서 6장 14절에서 기원한다.

1. When I survey the wond'rous Cross
    On which the Prince of Glory dy'd,
    My richest Gain I count but Loss,
    And pour Contempt on all my Pride.

2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
    Save in the Death of Christ my God:
    All the vain Things that charm me most,
    I sacrifice them to his Blood.

3. See from his Head, his Hands, his Feet,
    Sorrow and Love flow mingled down!
    Did e'er such Love and Sorrow meet,
    Or Thorns compose so rich a Crown?

4. His dying Crimson, like a Robe,
    Spreads o'er his Body on the Tree;
    Then I am dead to all the Globe,
    And all the Globe is dead to me.

5. Were the whole Realm of Nature mine,
    That were a Present far too small;
    Love so amazing, so divine,
    Demands my Soul, my Life, my All.
