History[편집]

Overview[편집]

In 2018, Min Wooseok, who entered university as a freshman, used to share his passion for music with his fellow students. Choi Wonmin and Kim Taeyang, who were his classmates at the time, became friends as they consistently listened to his musical praises. Choi Wonmin, majoring in jazz piano, and Min Wooseok, who was majoring in bass at the time, regularly harmonized during ensemble classes and shared many conversations about their musical perspectives. Kim Taeyang, majoring in audio engineering, couldn't attend ensemble classes but maintained a close relationship with Min Wooseok and shared a vision for the band. Around that time, during the upcoming vacation, as Kim Taeyang's military service was approaching, he proposed to Min Wooseok to start a band together after his discharge, and Min Wooseok agreed.

In March 2019, Min Woo-seok initially intended to continue attending school as per his father's wishes, but during the second semester, he decided to take a leave of absence. Min Woo-seok, who wanted to pursue his own music, made his debut as a singer-songwriter on November 21st on the TBC Youth Busking 'Music Camp' program.[2] [3] However, unable to resist the allure of being in a band, he shared a vision for band activities with Choi Won-min, who had been collaborating with him in a school band[4], saying, 'We need to do our music together.'After that, Min Woo-seok, who had been friends with his mentor 'Yang Dong-gi'[5] since his high school dropout days, consulted with him and decided to prepare for band activities rather than pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter.

In the following year, which was 2020, Min Woo-seok, starting with keyboardist Choi Won-min, formed the band on February 13th, along with drummer Park Jin, who was his junior at the school and had joined the team along with him in 2019, and bassist Choi Seong-wook, who had become acquainted with Min Woo-seok during ensemble classes after they became a team. All of them were rookies who had just started their indie band activities, and their passion for their activities was overflowing. However, after their first rehearsal, due to the pandemic, they couldn't meet for three months and had to take a break. During this break, they decided on the band's name, '이리와 내 꿈에 태워줄게 (Daydreamers),' which was inspired by the fanfiction of StarCraft pro-gamer Kang Min(Nal rA). The English name is 'Daydreamers,' taken from Kang Min's nickname, '몽상가'(Daydreamer). Afterward, starting from May, when the COVID situation improved slightly, they resumed their activities.[6]

Debut[편집]

In 2021, '이리와 내 꿈에 태워줄게 (Daydreamers)' completed their debut in February at Club Heavy alongside the band Igloo[7] and released a double single titled 용가리도 하늘을 날고 싶어 Due to the limitations of home recording and the challenges of their first production, they didn't gain much attention. However, the band was satisfied with the experience of creating and distributing music together, and the modest responses from close acquaintances gave them hope. During that time, Min Woo-seok entrusted the mixing to Kim Tae-yang, who was on vacation, and over the course of several days, they discussed various aspects of their band activities.

At the end of April, Kim Tae-yang, who was on his last vacation from the military service, expressed a desire to join the band's rehearsal and perform together on May 1st. They practiced together for several days and performed at the show. Kim Tae-yang felt a strong pull towards the band and expressed his determination to join after his discharge. However, in mid-June, Min Woo-seok suddenly announced the suspension of band activities, coinciding with the enlistment date of drummer Park Jin. Their last performance[8] marked the beginning of a break as they prepared for Park Jin's military service.

At their last rehearsal, they parted ways with the understanding that if their determination remained, they would be able to come together again. They spent their time separately during this period. On the other hand, Min Woo-seok composed the theme song for the '22nd Daegu Short Film Festival' With the hope that the band they started together would continue to the end, they secretly released the band's single Seed as the theme song for the '22nd Daegu Short Film Festival' along with a trailer video.[9] The opening video also included the song 빠졌네 from the double single.[10] In the process, Kim Tae-yang, who had completed his military service, officially joined the band.

At the end of August, except for Park Jin, they reunited for a performance at the Daegu Short Film Festival as part of the auxiliary event. During this process, they reaffirmed their determination to continue band activities. In November, on Park Jin's recommendation, they recruited drummer Choi Ju-chan and resumed their activities.[11] While preparing for various activities and recording an EP album, in September 2022, they received notice of Choi Ju-chan's departure from the band, and they continued their activities as a four-member group while awaiting Park Jin, who was nearing his discharge.

After Park Jin's discharge, they resumed their activities in late March 2023, starting with a special performance at the reopening of Seomun Night Market.[12] They are now active as a five-member group once again.

Get attention[편집]

They had been promoting their band through steady performances at Club Heavy, and in April 2022, they hosted an audio live concert radio. The live music video recorded on that day garnered attention within the local area. Following this, they started their first solo performance at James Record[13] in May and gained various experiences in different regions of South Korea.[14][15][16] Min Woo-seok, who had dropped out of high school, had a strong determination, which led him to participate in youth-related performances and projects.[17][18]

In August, the band pre-released the digital single 《Corona blue》 and received the Grand Prize at the 2022 TBC D-Rookie FESTA, once again gaining recognition in the local music scene. Following this, they performed at film festivals, folk festivals in the region, and collaborated with famous singers on various stages. They also appeared on local broadcasts, which led to appearances on national public broadcasts.[19] They built their reputation as a local emerging band with improved skills and stage performances. Towards the end of the year, they released 《꽃길》 in the 25th-anniversary compilation album 《대구인디음악연대기2022 Let's Roll》 from Club Heavy, a significant venue in the region. Following a release celebration performance, they released their first EP album 《발현(發現)》 in December 2022. The compilation album was released in February 2023.

In 2023, they started their activities with special performances at local markets, and continued to make their presence known. They also participated in invitation-only performances related to an exhibition Min Woo-seok was involved in.[20] Their performances took place at various venues, including Club Heavy, and even at a Hyundai department store. They also took part in performances organized by the national government[21], demonstrating their active engagement in the music scene.

In September, they released the digital single 《Like A Movie》 and unveiled its music video.

Album list & rating[편집]

  • Digital Double Single 《용가리도 하늘을 날고 싶어》, February 8, 2021 [22]
  • Digital Single 《제22회 대구단편영화제 주제곡 - SEED》, August 3, 2021 [23]
  • Digital Single 《Corona blue》, August 17, 2022 [24]

"The term 'corona blue' was coined due to the virus that swept across the world, causing a sense of distance from others, depression, and lethargy. Daydreamers' <Corona Blue> sings about the loneliness and longing that arose from such circumstances. However, it's not just a melancholic 'blue'; it also carries hope and anticipation for better days. Rather than dwelling in the stifling situation and the passing time, it encourages us to applaud, say hello, and eagerly await a brighter tomorrow. Perhaps one day, when we can finally take off our masks, we'll sing this song together. When that day comes, don't forget to join in the clapping and the 'Hi' in the middle of the song. If you're in the mood for some adorable country-style music, I highly recommend it, regardless of the current situation." -여기-

“The title that initially seemed to represent the challenging environment from both inside and outside, you first thought it was the band's name. The romantic band name that you initially assumed was the song's title. It's an electric guitar-driven pop number with catchy riffs. The rhythmic section accompanied by clapping sounds, uplifting keyboard melodies, and the acoustic guitar's presence all contribute to creating a perfect summer song that resembles the end of the sea. It's as if the band has added some cute elements to their perspective." -Park Byeong-un-

"It's an uncommon country song in the Korean music scene. Its refreshing quality created through rhythm is its greatest charm. The music video also effectively conveys a lively atmosphere. The youthful vocals express a tender heart, and the song introduces changes by altering or adding instruments that lead or support, all set to an upbeat rhythm, which helps alleviate the frustration of the COVID-19 pandemic era. However, it might have been better if it were a bit shorter." - Seo Jeong Min Gap - [25]

  • EP Album 《발현(發現)》, December 28, 2022 [26]

"I see the effort to capture things as they are. I read the sincerity in wanting to sing scenes from life where fear and joy, bursting laughter and fading pain are intertwined without embellishment. An album that makes you want to believe in people once again." - No Na-Ri Writer - [27]

"The reason we find ourselves leaning into everyday stories as though we're cooking rice is the gentleness in Minwoo Seok's singing voice. His voice, which sings not for the sake of singing, not to boast, invites all listeners to open up their sincere moments as if confessing. The performances by Kim Tae-yang, Minwoo Seok, Choi Seong-wook, and Choi Won-min, who do not strive for complexity or flamboyance, blend the emotions and attitudes of folk, pop, and modern rock. Their sunny, lyrical, and delicate musical texture cherishes lyrics and vocals, bringing dreams to life. When each of the six songs presents a different rhythm and performance, a youthful lingering feeling emerges, yet it doesn't always mean lowering one's voice. These songs, which often feel timid, continue the story of someone who is nervous and worried but doesn't deceive themselves. No matter how famous a song may be, there are songs you wouldn't want to change. In a world overflowing with voices that showcase and display, some songs remain steadfast. Warm songs that do not lie to oneself, to you, or to someone else. In the new year, I want to live like these songs." - Seo Jeong Min Gap - [28]

“The melody that resonates comfortably somewhere between modern rock and indie pop gestures shy stories that feel like accidentally stolen love letters from a sweetheart. 'Come here.' 'Let's walk the new dream path we've created together.' The choice is yours, but one thing can be said for sure. On that path, no one will get hurt, and any story will be listened to with care. Ironically, a clear conviction shines through the inexperience. Somehow, it's embarrassingly so." - Kim Yoon-ha, Popular Music Critic - [29]

“Sometimes, when I listen to Daydreamers music, I feel like tears will always come to my eyes. Is it the guilt of losing my innocence and my younger days? The EP 《발현(發現)》, which is filled with dreams, hope, and purity, is beautiful. It will be their only time." - Singer-songwriter Shim Sang-myeong - [30]

  • Compilation Album 《대구인디음악연대기2022 Let's Roll》 February 13, 2023 [31]

- The album recommended to 서정민갑 in Otter's map's 'Otter's P!ck 1st Quarter 23' is the band's 《꽃길》 among the compilation tracks.[32]

  • Digital Single 《Like a Movie》, September 13, 2023 [33]
