Kwak YoonChan (틀:Ko-hhrmborn September 27, 1968) is a South Korean fusion-jazz pianist. As the first Korean to be selected by the Blue Note Records, Jazz pianist Yoonchan Kwak is an artist who has constructed his own artistic style through outstanding melodic sense and sophisticated techniques.
Biography[편집]
He established a solid harmonic concept. After he graduated from Tokyo Muse School of Music in 1989, he went to the United States in 1993 and graduated from Berklee College of Music-- the cradle of Jazz education that raised world-famous maestros. In 1996, before his return to Korea he performed a 'Yoonchan Kwak Trio' in the Berklee performance center and received favorable reviews. One of them is from Ray Santisi, Keith Jarrett's teacher, who termed him 'the best pianist among Berklee students.' In the same year, he returned to Korea and built connections through performing with both national and international musicians. Among the musicians who performed with him at the time are Chuck Mangione-- a member of the Art Blakey & Jazz Messengers and a world-renown trumpet/flugelhorn player, American Saxophonist Dale Fielder, and Japanese Jazz vocalist Keiko Lee. Since then, he has performed and recorded with global musicians like John Clayton, Drew Gress, Gregory Hutchinson, Jeff Hamilton, John Patitucci, Ricky Lawson, and Alex Al.
