패션 핏(Passion Pit)은 2007년에 결성된 영국 케임브리지, 미국 매사추세츠 출신 인디 록 밴드다.[1] 밴드의 멤버로는 마이클 앤젤라코스(리드 보컬, 키보드), 이안 헐트퀴스트(키보드, 기타), 샌더 싱(신시사이저, 샘플러), 제프 아프루제스(베이스, 신스 베이스), 그리고 크리스 하르츠(드럼, 타악기)가 있다. 에머슨 대학(Emerson College)에 다녔던 마이클 앤젤라코스를 제외한 모든 멤버는 버클리 음악 대학을 다녔다.

역사[편집]

밴드명[편집]

패션 핏은 그들의 밴드명을 Variety라는 잡지의 속어 사전(Variety Slanguage Dictionary)[2]에서 골랐다. 해당 잡지의 정의에 따르면, 패션 핏(Passion pit)은 드라이브인 영화관의 은밀하고 로맨틱한 특성에서 유래한 속어다.[3][4]

결성[편집]

패션 핏의 첫번째 곡들은 에머슨 대학에 재학 중이던 마이클 앤젤라코스에 의해 만들어졌다. 마이클은 그 곡들을 늦은 발렌타인 데이 선물로써 당시 여자친구에게 헌정했으며, 그것들은 나중에 패션 핏의 첫 앨범인 Chunk of Change에 수록된다. 초기에 마이클은 자신의 노트북을 이용해 곡을 썼으며 모든 악기를 혼자서 연주했다. 보스턴에서 있었던 마이클의 솔로 공연에서, 당시 버클리 음대에 다니던 이안 헐트퀴스트는 그와 함께 음악을 만들고 연주하고 싶다는 의사를 전했다.[3] 마이클, 이안, 아야드 알 애드하미, 톰 플라세(베이스), 그리고 애덤 래빈스키(드럼)는 패션 핏을 결성했다. 그들은 패션 핏에게 가장 적합한 작업 형태와 구조를 구체화하기 위해 많은 시간을 보냈다. 제프 아프루제스와 네이트 돈모이여는 패션 핏이 2008년에 Frenchkiss 레이블과 계약한 후에 합류해, 톰 플라세와 애덤 래빈스키의 자리를 대체했다. [4][5] 2012년에 아야드 알 애드해미가 탈퇴하고 샌더 싱이 가입해 현재의 패션 핏이 되었다.

Chunk of Change (2007년- 2009년)[편집]

패션 핏의 데뷔 앨범인 Chunk of Change는 2008년 12월 16일에 발매되었다.[6] 처음 4개의 트랙은 마이클이 여자친구에게 선물하기 위해 작곡했던 것이며, 그가 에머슨 대학을 다닐 때 직접 제작한 앨범의 카피들로 이미 교내에서 유명해져 있었다. 'Sleepyhead'와 'Better Things'는 EP의 상업적 발매를 위해 추가된 곡들이다.[7] 패션 핏의 앨범이 발매된 것과 같은 해에 그들은 WFNX/Boston Phoenix에서 진행한 설문조사에서 "Best New Local Act in 2008"에 선정되었다.[6]

이 EP에서 발매된 단 하나의 싱글인 "Sleepyhead"는 많은 미디어 캠페인과 광고에 사용되어 유명해졌고, 제작사 The Wilderness가 감독을 맡은 해당 곡의 뮤직비디오가 피치포크 미디어의 2008년 뮤직비디오 차트 40위 안에 들었다.[8] "Sleepyhead"는 아일랜드 가수이자 하프 연주자인 매리 오하라(Mary O'Hara)의 곡인 "Óró Mo Bháidín"의 샘플링을 포함하고 있다.[9]

이 EP의 다른 곡들 중 하나인 "Cuddle Fuddle”은 영국의 TV 채널인 E4의 프로그램 인비트위너스 (The Inbetweeners) 두번째 시리즈에 삽입되었으며, "I've Got Your Number”는 영국 회사인 O2의 카드 광고에 사용되었다.

Manners (2009년- 2011년)[편집]

패션 핏의 첫번째 스튜디오 앨범인 Manners는 2009년 5월 18일에 미국과 캐나다에서 발매되었다.[10] 이를 기념하기 위해, 밴드는 18일 뉴욕에서 앨범 발매 파티를 열었다.[11] 이 앨범은 음악 잡지 Clash의 사전 리뷰에서, "올해 최고의 앨범으로 평가될 만하다", "장수하는 앨범의 확실한 증거대로, 들을 때마다 새로운 뉘앙스가 더해진다"는 찬사를 받았다.[12]

패션 핏은 Manners 특유의 백그라운드 보컬을 얻기 위해 PS22 합창단에 도움을 요청했으며, 그들은 "The Reeling", "Little Secrets", "Let Your Love Grow Tall"의 녹음에 참가했다.[13] "The Reeling"은 앨범으로부터 처음 발매된 싱글이며, 2009년 10월 빌보드 얼터너티브 음악 차트 34위에 오르는 데 성공한다.[14] 또 "Little Secrets"는 앨범의 세번째 싱글로, 같은 차트의 39위에 오른다. "Let Your Love Grow Tall"은 싱글로 발매된 적은 없으나 티비 시리즈 어글리 베티(Ugly Betty) 시즌 4의 16화에서 삽입곡으로 사용되었다.

앨범의 두번째 싱글인 "To Kingdom Come"은 온라인 뮤직 서비스 Rapsody의 아이폰 앱 광고에서 사용되었다.

"Sleeyhead"는 Chunk of Change에서 가져와 앨범에 포함시킨 유일한 곡이며, 2009년에 아이튠즈에서 무료로 다운로드 할 수 있었다. 이 곡은 광고에 등장되며 지속적으로 알려졌다. 이 곡은 드라마 스킨스 시즌 3와 비디오 게임 리틀빅플래닛 2에 사용되어,[15] 드라마 팬과 게임 유저들 사이에서 패션 핏의 인기가 높아지게 하는 계기가 되었다.

"Moth's Wings"은 CW의 드라마 가십걸 시즌 3의 4번째 에피소드와, HBO의 빅 러브 36번째 에피소드의 엔딩 크레딧에 사용되었다. 또한 FIFA 10과 캐서린 헤이글, 조시 더멜이 출연한 영화 커플로 살아남기 (Life as We Know It)에서 사용되었다. 이 곡은 스카이 스포츠의 UEFA 챔피언스 리그 중계 방송의 배경음악과, 미국 오디션 프로그램인 So You Think You Can Dance의 댄스용 음악으로 사용되어, 프로그램의 심사위원에게 기립박수를 받기도 했다. 또, 이 곡은 MTV의 TV쇼인 ‘’어크워드(Awkward)의 두 에피소드에 사용되었다.[16]

2009년 6월, 패션 핏은 영국 서머싯 글래스턴베리(Glastonbury)에서 공연을 한다. 그들은 당시 페스티벌의 헤드라이너이자 당일 같은 무대에서 공연을 한 자비스 코커(Jarvis Cocket)에게 셋리스트의 마지막 곡을 헌정한다.[17] 그 후에, 패션 핏의 공연에 대해 호의적으로 평가한 NME는 그들이 셋리스트 전체를 헌정했다고 오보하기도 했다.[18]

2010년 10월, 패션 핏은 영국의 밴드 뮤즈와 함께 미국 투어를 하며, 8번의 오프닝 공연에 참가했다.[21]

Gossamer (2011년- 2013년)[편집]

2010년 8월 NME와의 인터뷰에서, 마이클은 Manners의 후속 앨범에 대한 작업은 이미 시작되었으며, 앨범은 2011년 봄에 발표할 예정이라고 말했다.[22] 패션 핏은 2012년 5월 브라질 롤라팔루자(Lollapalooza) 페스티벌에서 공연을 한 다음 날, 앨범의 제목은 ‘’Gossamer이며, 2012년 7월 24일에 발매될 것이라고 발혔다.[23]

2012년 5월 7일, Gossamer의 첫번째 트랙인 "Take a Walk"가 공개되었다.[24]

6월 12일, Gossamer의 두번째 트랙인 "I’ll be Alright"가 공개되었다. 이 곡은 6월 11일에 미리 유출되었으며, 6월 8일 NME 프리미어로 공개되었다.[25]

7월 9일, Gossamer의 세번째 트랙인 "Constant Conversations"가 피치포크의 리뷰와 함께 "Best New Track"에서 사용되었다. 이 곡은 리뷰와 함께 스트리밍 형태로 감상할 수 있도록 공개되었다.[26] Gossamer는 공식적으로 2012년 7월 20일에 발매되었다.

On July 16, Angelakos posted on the Passion Pit website that the band has cancelled the remaining July tour dates and suspended the tour in order for Angelakos to seek ongoing treatment for Bipolar Disorder.[27] A Rolling Stones interview stated that Angelakos was diagnosed at 17, undergoing therapy, hospital care, and medication ever since.[28]

On October 13, they performed on Saturday Night Live. They played "Take a Walk" and "Carried Away."[29]

On September 24, 2013, Passion Pit released the Constant Conversations (EP), originally released through Spotify, but was then made available on iTunes. The EP featured an alternative version of Constant Conversations from their 2012 album Gossamer, in addition to a formerly unreleased b-side called Ruin Your Day. The final track on the EP was a remix of Carried Away by Dillon Francis.[30]

On 15 July 2013, it was announced publicly that the band would be headlining the first ever "Coastline Festival" in Tampa, Florida and West Palm Beach, Florida with Two Door Cinema Club and Matt & Kim. Also included in the lineup are groups such as Fitz and The Tantrums, The Joy Formidable, The Neighbourhood, Capital Cities, The Mowgli's, Blondfire, Surfer Blood, The Royal Concept and St. Lucia.

2014 - Present, Third Studio Album[편집]

On June 24, 2014, Angelakos announced through Twitter that Passion Pit are working on their as yet untitled third studio album.[31]

Awards and accolades[편집]

In the 2012 listeners of Australia's alternative radio station Triple J Hottest 100, voted "Take A Walk" into number 46 of the hottest 100 tracks for the year.[32] Also, in 2012 their album "Gossamer" was number one on the Top Digital Album Billboard.
