English: Morris Marina 2 door coupe shortly after model launch. During the 1974 fuel shortage, drivers in Austria found themselves barred from driving their car one day per week. The 'MI' sticker on the windscreen indicates that the driver may not drive his Vienna registered Marina 1.3 on a Wednesday (Mittwoch). The condensation on the screen indicates that the picture was taken on a cold though bright day.
Behind the Marina is a Ford Cortina Mk II. This is the Cortina version that was sold in the UK and in much of mainland Europe between 1966 and 1970: it is the competitor model that British Leyland had in their sights as they developed the Morris Marina.
In Austria, where the picture was taken, Volkswagen Beetles, like the one across the road, still dominated the market for small cars, though the Beetle was no longer quite the unstoppable sales success it had been a few years earlier: later in 1974 it was joined in the VW line-up by an interesting new model inspired by one Italian and designed by another.
