Three mummies of the Cynocephalus ordog-hcaded Ape, an animal which was associated with theMoon, and was the companion of Thoth, and which, undercertain circumstances, was the representative of this god.This animal was sacred to Khonsu as the god of the Moon, MUMMIED APES, GAZELLE, CATS. 63 The sun at his rising was supposed to be hymned by acompany of seven of these apes, which, as soon as thedisk was above the horizon, turned into the spirits of thedawn. The dog-headed ape was, and still is, a native ofthe Sudan, and is often associated with the god Bes, who,according to some, is of Nubian or Sudanese origin. (Nos. 35,856,6736,35,857.)

A group of mummied cats, with eyesformed of pads of linen painted and sewn on to the outerwrapping. Nos. (3 (5 are specially interesting on»account of the careful bandaging in linen of two colours, arrangedin a symmetrical diamond pattern. XXth dynasty, orlater (l,.C. IOOO ?). (Nos. 6751 6753,6756.) On the second shelf is arranged a fine representativeseries of bronze and wooden figures of cats, and casesfor mummied cats; among these may be speciallymentioned :— No. 16. Wooden, mummied cat case, which wasoriginally covered with plaster and painted linen. Theirides of the eyes are formed of slices of crystal laid upona gilded surface, and the closed pupils are made of blackobs
