뉴미너스

뉴미너스(영어: Numinous, /ˈnjuːmɪnəs/)는 라틴어 누멘에서 파생된 영어 형용사이다. 이 용어의 뜻은 영적 혹은 종교적 감정을 고양하는 것, 신비감 혹은 경외심을 불어넣는 것을 의미한다.

기원

뉴미너스는 17세기에 라틴어 '누멘'(numen)에서 파생된 영어 형용사이다. numen은 (특히 고대 로마 종교에서) "물건이나 공간을 주관하는 신(神) 또는 영혼"이라는 뜻을 담고 있다. 'numen'과 관련된 용어가 의미하는 것은 그것이 신의 힘, 임재 혹은 실현이다. 그것은 임마누엘 칸트 (Immanuel Kant)의 물자체(noumenon)와 어원적으로 관련이 없다. 물자체라는 그리스어 단어는 만물 속에 있는 알 수 없는 실재를 언급한다.
