플라이슈만-폰즈 실험1989년 3월미국 유타대학교의 전기화학자 마틴 플라이슈만스탠리 폰즈가 수행해, 상온 핵융합이 가능하다고 주장했던 실험이다. 플라이슈만과 폰즈는 팔라듐 전극을 이용해 중수를 전기분해하는 실험을 하는 도중에 비정상적으로 많은 양의 열이 방출되는 것을 확인했다.[1] 그들은 이 정도로 많은 열은 핵반응을 거치지 않고서는 발생될 수 없다고 역설했다. 또한 그들은 중성자삼중수소를 포함한 핵반응의 부산물이 검출되었다고 주장했다.[2]

당시 언론은 전기분해 장치 안에서 핵융합이 일어나고 있다고 보도했고[3], 이러한 보도는 대중에게 값싸고 풍부한 에너지원에 대한 희망을 일으켰다.[4] 그러나 이 실험의 재현은 번번이 실패했고 원래 실험의 오류와 오차들이 속속 나타났다. 결국 플라이슈만과 폰즈가 실제로 핵반응의 부산물을 검출하지 못했다는 것이 알려지면서[5] 상온 핵융합은 더 이상 학계에서 논의되지 않게 되었다.[6][7] 1989년 말에 이르러 상온 핵융합은 ‘병적인 과학(pathological science)’의 대표적인 사례로 낙인찍히게 되었다.[8]
