무거운 별 주위를 물질이 둘러싸 빛을 가리고 있다. 천체 예술가의 상상화
용골자리 에타의 질량은 태양의 약 150배로, 이는 항성이 지닐 수 있는 질량의 상한선에 가깝다.

아래 표는 지금까지 관측된 별들 중 질량이 큰 것들을 순서대로 정렬한 것이다. 단위는 태양질량이다.

질량은 항성의 모든 것을 결정하는 가장 중요한 요소이다. 질량은 항성의 화학적 조성 상태와 맞물려 그 별의 밝기, 물리적 크기, 운명까지 결정한다. 질량이 큰 별의 경우 대부분 초신성 폭발로 일생을 마치며, 블랙홀을 형성하기도 한다.

불확실한 점 및 논쟁거리

아래 표에 수록된 항성들의 질량은 이론 및 표면 온도와 절대 광도를 이용하여 복잡한 계산을 수행하여 얻은 값이다. 따라서 수록된 질량들은 확실한 수치가 아니다(이론 및 측정자료들이 구할 수 있는 한계점에서 나온 것이다). 이론과 측정값 모두 틀릴 수 있다. 대표적 예로 세페우스자리 VV A가 있는데, 이 별의 물리적 수치를 어떤 모형을 통해 구하느냐에 따라 질량은 태양의 25 ~ 40배 또는 100배까지 판이하게 달라진다.

그 중에서 가장 신빙성 있는 질량값은 A1WR20a+b로 직접 측정하여 얻은 것이다. 둘 다 쌍성계의 일원으로, 쌍성계 구성원들의 공전 움직임을 분석하여, 케플러의 행성 운동법칙에 의거하여 각각의 질량을 구할 수 있었다. 이들의 질량을 알아내는 데 광도곡선시선 속도도 이용되었는데, 이는 둘 다 식쌍성이었기 때문이다.

질량이 큰 별은 드물다. 아래 수록된 모든 별들은 태양계에서 수천 광년 이상 떨어져 있으며 보통 홀로 존재하기 때문에 질량 측정을 힘들게 만든다. 멀리 떨어져 있다는 것 외에도 무거운 별들 주변에는 자신이 방출한 가스로 인해 성운이 형성되어 있기 때문에 항성의 빛을 가려 정확한 표면 온도와 밝기, 내부 화학 조성에 대한 자료를 구하기 힘들게 만든다. 따라서 아래 목록의 자료값들은 대부분 논란 중에 있으며 연구 결과에 따라 수치는 재조정된다.

다음 두 목록은 산개성단, OB 성협, H II 영역의 별을 포함하여 알려진 별 중 몇 가지를 수록한다. 목록의 상당수의 별들은 높은 광도에도 불구하고 맨눈으로 관찰하기에는 너무 멀리 떨어져 있으며 적어도 맨눈으로 가끔 볼 수 있는 별은 겉보기 등급(6.5 이상)이 파란색으로 강조되어 있다.

첫 번째 목록은 60 M 이상으로 추정되는 별으로 그 중 대부분이 수록되며 두 번째 목록에는 비교를 위해 60 M 미만의 주목할만한 별이 수록되어 있다. 데이터의 불확실성에 대한 정보를 제공하기 위해 각 별의 질량을 결정하는 데 사용되는 방법이 포함되어있으며 쌍성의 질량은 훨씬 더 정확하게 결정될 수 있다. 아래 나열된 질량은 별의 초기 질량이 아닌 현재 질량이다.
