Dong-shin Bae 1920~2008 Korean Artist Watercolor

배동신(裵東信 1920~2008) Korean Artist Watercolor.

Born in Korea on June 16, 1920. In 1937 he went to Japan to study art. In 1943, he graduated from the Department of Western Painting, Kawabata Art School in Japan. In 1943, he became a member of the Japan Free Artists Association. He returned home. He opened his first solo exhibition in Gwangju in 1947. In 1950, the Korean War broke out. In 1964, 1967, and 1969, he held a solo exhibition of watercolors in Jeolla-do. Dong-shin Bae held 26 solo exhibitions in his life. He held solo exhibitions in Seoul, Tokyo and Osaka. In 1968, he became the first president of the Association of Watercolor Artists. In 1970, he created an art group called "Hwangtohoe" with Ji-ho Oh, Chul-gyo Park, Yeon-gyun Kang, Je-gil Woo, Young-tae Kim, Yong-gap Choi, In-gyu Kim, Dong-moon Kang, and Soo-ho Kim, and others. In 1972, he was invited as a major member of the "Gusangjeon". In 1975, he served as the first president of the Korean Watercolor Association. Since 1973, it has been invited to the Korean National Museum of Modern Art every year. In 1996, an exhibition was held in his hometown, Gwangju, to commemorate Dong-shin Bae's 60 years of watercolor painting. He was awarded the Korean Cultural Medal in 2000.

As a world-renowned watercolor artist, he has contributed to bringing watercolors, recognized as sketches of oil paintings, into the genre of painting and devoted to the development of barren local art.
