에너지는 " 미래 세대 가 자신의 필요를 충족할 수 있는 능력을 손상시키지 않으면서 현재의 필요를 충족시키는" 경우 지속 가능하다. [1] 지속 가능한 에너지 에 대한 대부분의 정의에는 온실 가스 배출과 같은 환경적 측면과 에너지 빈곤 과 같은 사회 경제적 측면에 대한 고려가 포함된다. 풍력, 수력, 태양열 및 지열 에너지와 같은 재생 가능 에너지 원은 일반적으로 화석 연료원보다 훨씬 더 지속 가능하다. 그러나 바이오 연료를 생산하기 위해 산림을 개간하는 것과 같은 일부 재생 에너지 프로젝트는 심각한 환경 피해를 일으킬 수 있다. 지속 가능한 에너지에서 재생 불가능한 에너지원의 역할은 논란의 여지가 있다. 원자력은 역사적 사망률이 풍력과 태양열에 필적하는 저탄소 공급원이지만 방사성 폐기물, 핵 확산 및 사고에 대한 우려로 인해 지속 가능성에 대해 논란이 되고 있다. 석탄에서 천연 가스로 전환하면 기후에 미치는 영향을 낮추는 등 환경적 이점이 있지만 보다 지속 가능한 옵션으로 전환하는 데 지연이 발생할 수 있다. 탄소 포집 및 저장 은 이산화탄소 ( CO2 ) 배출을 제거하기 위해 발전소에 구축될 수 있지만 비용이 많이 들고 거의 구현되지 않았다.

지구 온난화를 2 °C (3.6 °F)로 제한하는 것과 양립할 수 있는 제안된 기후 변화 완화 경로에서, 세계는 석탄 화력 발전소를 빠르게 단계적으로 폐지하고 풍력 및 태양열과 같은 청정 자원에서 더 많은 전기를 생산하며 운송 및 건물 난방과 같은 부문에서 연료 대신 전기를 사용하는 방향으로 전환한다. 전기화하기 어려운 일부 에너지 집약적 기술 및 프로세스의 경우 많은 경로에서 저배출 에너지원에서 생산되는 수소 연료의 역할이 증가하고 있음을 설명한다. 가변 재생 에너지 의 더 많은 부분을 수용하기 위해 전기 그리드는 에너지 저장과 같은 기반 시설을 통한 유연성이 필요한다. 배출량을 크게 줄이려면 건물 및 운송 시스템과 같이 에너지를 사용하는 기반 시설 및 기술을 청정 형태의 에너지를 사용하고 에너지를 절약하도록 변경해야 한다. 에너지 관련 온실 가스 배출을 제거하기 위한 일부 핵심 기술은 아직 성숙하지 않았다.
