Ankunft des Simplon-Express in Genf (Bahnhof Genève-Cornavin) um 1906. - Typenskizze B ¾ 1561-1578 (ex Jura-Simplon Nr. 201-204, ex O-S Nr. 91-94).
An der Spitze des eingetroffenen Schnellzugs steht eine Gemischtzuglokomotive des Typs B ¾ („Mogul“) der früheren Jura-Simplon-Bahn (J-S). Die Maschine mit einer Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 75 km/h stammt aus der 1. Serie von vier Stück (J-S-Betriebsnummern 201-204), die 1887 von der Schweizerischen Lokomotiv- und Maschinenfabrik (SLM), Winterthur, für die J-S-Vorgängerin Compagnie Suisse-Occidentale et Simplon (O-S) als Nr. 91-94) gebaut wurden. Von den Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen (SBB) wurden sie nach der Verstaatlichung der J-S 1903 als B ¾ 1421-1424 übernommen. Die Jura-Bern-Luzern-Bahn und die Jura-Simplon-Bahn liessen 1889 und 1891 in Winterthur eine zweite Serie von 18 Stück eines weiter entwickelten Mogultyp mit Zweizylinder-Verbundmaschune und den Betriebsnummern 205-222 bauen (SBB B ¾ 1561-1578).
Mit der Eröffnung des Simplontunnels - des mit 19'803 m damals längsten Tunnels der Welt - wurde 1906 eine neue transkontinentale und transalpine Eisenbahnverbindung von Paris und Calais (-London) nach Lausanne und durch das Rhonetal (Wallis) nach Mailand (Italien) geschaffen. Die Simplonverbindung war das Werk mehrerer privater Vorgängerbahnen, wurde aber erst durch die Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen vollendet. Während der Verkehr durch den Simplontunnel von Anfang an elektrisch betrieben wurde (bis 1930 mit Drehstrom), fuhren durch das Rhonetal noch bis in die 1920er Jahre Dampflokomotiven.
