로도스의 위치
로도스(그리스어: Ρόδος, Ródos)는 그리스 로도스 섬 북동단에 위치한 도시로, 도데카니사 현의 현청 소재지이며 면적은 19.481km2, 높이는 0 ~ 25m, 인구는 53,709명(2001년 기준), 인구 밀도는 2,757명/km2이다.
고대에는 세계 7대 불가사의 가운데 하나인 로도스의 거상으로 유명했으며 성 요한 기사단에 의해 건설된 요새(구 시가지)는 1988년 유네스코가 지정한 세계유산으로 선정된 곳이다.
위치
로도스 섬 북동단에 위치하며 북쪽에서 남쪽으로 삼각형 모양을 띠고 있다. 로도스 섬에서 면적이 가장 작고 인구가 가장 많은 도시이며 북쪽과 동쪽, 서쪽으로는 에게 해와 접하고 있고 남쪽으로는 이알리소스(Ialysos), 칼리테아(Kallithea)와 접한다.
역사
로도스 섬은 유럽과 중동, 아프리카를 연결하는 요충지로 여겨졌으며 오랜 역사를 갖고 있기 때문에 건축적, 문화적, 언어적으로 서로 다른 특색을 갖고 있다. 기원전 4000년경부터 로도스 섬에 사람이 살았던 것으로 추측된다[1].
