얀 드 브리스(Jan de Vries, 1943.11.14.~)는 네덜란드 경제사학자이다. 미국 캘리포니아 대학교 버클리(University of California) 명예교수이다.[1] 산업혁명(Industrial Revolution), 유럽 도시화는 물론 네덜란드 경제사에 관한 연구로 잘 알려져 있다.[2][1][3] 2002년 미국철학학회(American Philosophical Society)에 선발되었다.[4]

생애[편집]

드 브리스는 1943년 11월 14일 네덜란드 아우더르암스털(Ouder-Amstel)에서 태어났으나, 곧바로 미국으로 이민하였고 미국 국적을 취득했으며 지금까지 미국 시민이다. 컬럼비아 대학교(Columbia University)에서 학사학위를 받았고 1970년 예일 대학교(Yale University)에서 박사학위를 받았다. 1977년 이후로는 역사학 교수이며, 1982년 이후로는 버클리에서 경제 부분을 더하였다.

특히 그는 근세 네덜란드 경제사에 종사하면서, 이에 관하여 아드 반 데르 보우드(Ad van der Woude)와 함께 '최초의 근대 경제, 1500-1815년 네덜란드 경제의 성공, 실패, 그리고 지속(The First Modern Economy. Success, Failure and Perseverance of the Dutch Economy from 1500 to 1815)'을 썼다. 이로 인해 1999년, 기오르기 란키 최고 경제사 서적상(Prix Gyorgy Ranki du meilleur livre d'histoire économique)을 수상했다.[5] 그외에도 그는 도시사, 기후사, 세계사, 인구사, 근세 노동시장과 예술시장의 역사에 대해 연구했다.

2000년, 유럽 경제 발전에 대한 선구적인 연구 업적에 따라 A.H. 하이네켄상 역사학부문상(A.H. Heineken Prize for History)을 받았다.[6]. 1991년부터 1993년까지 미국경제사학회(Economic History Association) 회장이자, 경제사지(Journal of Economic History) 편집인이었다.

그는 네덜란드 왕립 예술 과학 아카데미(Königlich Niederländischen Akademie der Wissenschaften) 외국인회원, 영국 학사원(British Academy) 외국인회원, 미국 예술 과학 아카데미(American Academy of Arts and Sciences) 회원,[7] der 미국철학학회(American Philosophical Society) 회원,[8] 네덜란드문학학회(Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde) 회원이다.
