음반 발매에 앞서 "Real Friends"와 "No More Parties in LA"를 포함한 싱글들이 선공개된 바 있으며, 발매하기 한달 전부터 음반명과 수록곡 구성이 계속해서 바뀌었으며, 웨스트의 지속적인 소셜 네트워크 서비스를 통한 기행으로 인해 많은 논란이 되었다. 이 음반의 초기 버전은 2016년 2월 11일 매디슨 스퀘어 가든에서 아디다스와의 협력 하에 열린 패션 쇼 이지 시즌 3 (Yeezy Season 3)에서 초연되었으며, 이후 음반 수록곡 수정 및 추가를 거쳐 3일 뒤 타이달을 통해 처음 발매되었다.

웨스트는 발매 이전 이 음반을 힙합과 가스펠 음악이 섞인 음반이라고 언급했다. 공식적으로 발매된 뒤에도 웨스트는 이 음반을 계속해서 수정해 나갔으며, 데프 잼 레코딩스 측에서는 웨스트의 수정안을 계속해서 업데이트 할 의향이 있음을 이야기한다. 2016년 4월 1일 믹싱과 수록곡 추가 등 다양한 수정 과정을 거친 버전의 음반이 다른 음악 플랫폼에도 발매되었으며, 별도의 CD 등으로는 제작되지 않았다. 발매 이후 "Famous", "Father Stretch My Hands", "Fade"를 추가적으로 싱글 발매하였다.
