타란토 위성사진

타란토(이탈리아어: Taranto)는 이탈리아 남부 풀리아주에 있는 도시이다. 인구 201,349(2001). 타란토 만에 돌출한 반도와 그에 인접한 섬에 위치한다. 장화 모양의 이탈리아 반도에서 굽 안쪽에 해당하는 부분에 있다.

타란토는 기원전 8세기에 건설되었고, 지중해 가운데의 항구로서 입지조건이 좋아 중요한 항구도시로 발전하였다. 19세기 후반과 20세기 전반의 이탈리아 왕국 시절에는 군항으로 이탈리아의 아프리카 진출의 거점 도시였으나, 그에 따라 제2차 세계대전 때 연합군의 폭격으로 큰 피해를 입었다. 제2차 세계대전 후에는 이탈리아 남부 개발의 거점으로 제철공업을 비롯한 여러 제조업이 입지하였다. 풀리아 주에서 주도 바리 다음으로 큰 도시이며, 이탈리아 전체에서는 16번째로 인구가 많은 도시이다.[1]

오래된 도시로 옛 유적이 많다. 한편 독거미로 유명한 타란툴라와 그에서 비롯된 춤 타란텔라는 이 도시의 명칭에서 유래한 것으로 알려져 있다.
