안선재(Brother Anthony (앤서니 수사), 본명: Anthony Graham Teague, 1942년 출생)는 번역가, 영문학자, 떼제 공동체 소속 회원으로서 영국에서 출생하여 한국으로 귀화하였다.

생애[편집]

안선재는 1942년 1월 3일 영국의 콘월에서 토마스 레슬리 티그 (Thomas Leslie Teague; 1914년 2월 2일 - 1985년 3월 26일)와 난 알비나 그린 (Nan Albina Green; 1911년 7월 24일 - 1991년 2월 3일) 사이에서 태어났다.[1] 그는 옥스퍼드 대학교에서 중세와 현대 언어를 공부했고, 1969년에 신뢰와 화해의 메시지를 전파하는 데 전념하는 개신교, 성공회 및 가톨릭 전통의 남성들로 구성된 수도회인 프랑스의 떼제 공동체에 합류하였다.[2]

필리핀 빈민가에서 3년 간 봉사 후,[3] 1980년 5월 고 김수환 추기경의 초청으로 한국의 떼제 공동체 수사들과 합류했다. 그 이후 약 30년 간 서울 서강대학교에서 영문학을 가르치면서 한국 현대 문학 작품 번역을 비롯해 문학과 번역에 관한 책과 논문을 발표하였다.

안선재는 1988년 한국의 현대 문학 번역을 시작하여 현재까지 구상, 고은, 천상병, 서정주, 김수영, 신경림, 이시영, 김광규, 박윤희, 이문열 등을 포함한 다수의 문인들의 작품을 번역했다. 1991년 고은의 시집 '아베교장' 번역으로 코리아타임스로부터 한국 현대문학번역상을 수상했다. 또한 1996년부터 공모전 심사 위원으로 활동하기 시작해 2021년까지 활동하고 있다.[4] 그는 1994년 안선재(An Sonjae)라는 한국 이름으로 한국에 귀화하게 되는데, 그의 이름 '선재'는 불교 경전 '간다뷰하 수트라(Gandavyuha Sutra)의 '작은 순례자'인 선재동자(Sudhana)의 이름에서 가져왔다.

2011년 1월부터 2020년 12월까지 한국왕립아시아학회 (Royal Asiatic Society Korea, RAS Korea) 회장을 역임했으며, RAS Korea 회장 중 최장 기간 회장직을 역임하였다.[5][6] 한국문학의 세계화에 기여한 공로로 정부로부터 문화훈장 옥관장 (Jade Crown)을 받았다. 2007년 서강대학교 교수직을 정년 퇴임 한 후, 현재 서강대학교 명예교수, 단국대학교 석좌교수로 재직 중이다. 2015년에는 영국으로부터 대영 제국 훈장(MBE)을 받았다.[7] 그는 현재 서울에 거주하고 있다.
