《성의 역사》(프랑스어: L'Histoire de la sexualité)는 프랑스의 역사학자이자 철학자인 미셸 푸코가 쓴 4권으로 구성된 연구서다. 푸코는 이 책에서 "성"이라는 개념이 독립적인 삶의 영역 및 담론적 대상으로 형성된 과정을 탐구하며, 모든 개인이 "성"을 가진다는 관념이 서구 사회에서 비교적 최근에 형성된 것이라고 주장한다.

제1권에서 푸코는 "억압 가설(repressive hypothesis)"을 비판한다. 억압 가설은 17세기부터 20세기 중반까지 자본주의와 부르주아 사회의 부상으로 인해 서구 사회가 성을 억압했다고 주장한다. 그러나 푸코는 이 시기에 오히려 성에 대한 담론이 폭발적으로 증가했다고 본다. 전문가들은 성을 과학적으로 탐구하기 시작했으며, 사람들에게 자신의 성적 감정과 행동을 고백하도록 장려했다.

푸코에 따르면, 18세기와 19세기 동안 사회는 결혼의 틀에 맞지 않는 다양한 성적 정체성에 점점 더 관심을 가지게 되었다. 이는 아동, 정신 이상자, 범죄자, 동성애자와 같은 "일탈(perversion)의 세계"를 포함한다. 19세기에 이르러서는 고백과 과학적 탐구를 통해 성이 활발히 논의되기 시작했다. 제2, 3권에서는 그리스와 로마 고대 사회에서 성의 역할을 다루며, 각각 고대 그리스의 성 윤리와 로마 시대의 자아 배려에 초점을 맞춘다.

책은 엇갈린 평가를 받았다. 일부 평론가들은 푸코의 통찰력과 담론 분석을 칭찬했지만, 다른 이들은 그의 학문적 접근과 자료 사용 방식에 대해 비판적이었다. 이 책은 성에 대한 서구 사회의 시각과 이를 둘러싼 담론을 재조명하며 학계와 대중 사이에서 지속적으로 논의되고 있다.

이러한 억압은 자본주의와 부르주아 사회의 부상으로 인한 부산물로 여겨지며, 현대에 성이 부분적으로 해방되기 이전의 상태로 이해된다. 푸코는 성이 결코 진정으로 억압된 적이 없다고 주장하며, 왜 현대 서구인들이 이 가설을 믿게 되었는지 묻는다. 그는 과거의 성을 억압된 것으로 묘사함으로써, 과거의 도덕 체계를 거부하고 미래의 성이 자유롭고 억제되지 않은, 즉 "지상의 기쁨의 정원"이 될 수 있다는 생각을 뒷받침한다고 지적한다.
