사운드스케이프

사운드스케이프(soundscape)는 상황에 따라 인간이 인지하는 음향 환경이다. 이 용어는 원래 마이클 사우스워스(Michael Southworth)[1]에 의해 만들어졌고 R. 머레이 셰이퍼(R. Murray Schafer)에 의해 대중화되었다.[2] 도시 디자인부터 야생 동물 생태학, 컴퓨터 과학에 이르기까지 분야에 따라 사운드스케이프를 사용한 다양한 역사가 있다.[3] 중요한 차이점은 사운드스케이프를 더 넓은 음향 환경과 분리하는 것이다. 음향 환경은 환경에 의해 수정된 특정 영역 내 자연 및 인공의 모든 음향 자원의 조합이다. 국제표준화기구(ISO)는 2014년에 이러한 정의를 표준화했다. 사운드스케이프는 몰입형 환경에서 형성되거나 발생하는 소리 또는 소리의 조합이다. 사운드스케이프에 대한 연구는 음향 생태학 또는 사운드스케이프 생태학의 주제이다. 사운드스케이프(soundscape)라는 개념은 동물의 발성을 포함한 자연 소리로 구성된 자연 음향 환경(이에 대한 집단적 서식지 표현은 현재 생체 음향이라고 함)과 예를 들어 날씨 및 기타 자연 요소의 소리를 모두 의미한다. 이를 지오포니(geophony)라고 불린다. 인간에 의해 생성된 환경 소리, 음악 구성, 사운드 디자인, 언어, 작업, 산업 기술의 사용으로 인해 발생하는 기계적인 소리와 같은 제어된 소리라는 하위 집합을 통한 인위적 소리이다. 결정적으로, 사운드스케이프라는 용어에는 환경으로 들리는 소리에 대한 청취자의 인식, 즉 "그 환경 안에 사는 사람들이 해당 환경을 어떻게 이해하는지"[4]가 포함되므로 이들의 관계를 중재한다. 이러한 음향 환경의 혼란은 소음 공해를 초래한다.[5]

"사운드스케이프"라는 용어는 특정 음향 환경을 경험하는 느낌을 생성하는 오디오 녹음 또는 사운드 연주, 또는 음향 환경에서 발견된 사운드를 독점적으로 또는 음악 연주와 함께 사용하여 생성된 작곡을 의미할 수도 있다.[6][7]

제2차 세계 대전 이후 전자 예술 음악의 작곡가인 폴린 올리베로스(Pauline Oliveros)는 "사운드스케이프"라는 용어를 "귀와 그 메커니즘에 의해 청각 피질에 충실하게 전달되는 모든 파형"으로 정의했다.[8]
