마르셀 에메(프랑스어: Marcel Aymé, 1902년 3월 29일~1967년 10월 14일)는 프랑스의 소설가이자 극작가이며[1][2] 영화 각본과 아동 문학도 썼다.

생애

마르셀 앙드레 에메는 1902년 프랑스 부르고뉴 지방의 주아니에서 여섯 자녀 중 막내로 태어났다. 그의 아버지 조제프(Joseph)는 대장장이였으며 에메의 어머니 엠마 모나미(Emma Monamy)는 1904년 에메가 두 살일 때 온 가족이 투르로 이사한 후 사망했다.[3] 에메는 외조부모와 함께 쥐라주의 빌레르로베르 마을로 보내졌으며 그곳에서 8년을 보냈다. 빌레르로베르는 그의 가장 대표적인 소설 《초록 망아지》(프랑스어: La Jument Verte)의 가상 마을인 클라크부(Claquebue)의 모델이 된 것으로 추측된다. 1906년 마르셀 에메는 지역의 한 초등학교에 입학했다. 그의 할아버지는 강경한 반성직 공화주의자였기 때문에, 그는 전통적인 견해를 가진 부모를 둔 학교 친구들에게 멸시를 받았다. 따라서 에메는 1908년 그의 할아버지가 돌아가신 지 거의 2년 후인 8살이 되기 전에 세례를 받지 못했다. 그로부터 2년 후에 할머니가 돌아가시면서 다시 고아가 된 에메는 잠시 다른 가족들과 함께 살다가 프랑슈콩테 지방의 작은 마을인 돌로 이사하여 이모와 함께 지내며 Collège de l'Arc에서 공부했다. 그곳에서 그는 문학보다는 수학에 더 재능이 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 그러나 그곳에서 보낸 그의 학창 시절은 순탄치 않았고 좋지 않은 기억으로 남게 되었다.[4][5][6]

에메는 어린 시절부터 쭉 건강이 좋지 않았음에도 불구하고, 1919년 라인란트 점령 시기 포병대에서 군 복무를 시작했다. 그는 1923년에 파리로 이사하여 은행, 보험 회사, 언론인으로 일했지만 성공을 거두지 못했다. 그는 기자로서는 실패를 맛봤지만 신문사에서 근무하면서 글쓰기에 대한 애정을 발견하게 되었다.[7][8][9]

그의 첫 출판 소설은 1926년에 쓴 Brûlebois였으며, 1929년에는 La Table aux crevés로 르노도상을 수상했다. 1933년 그의 소설 《초록 망아지》가 영문판 'The Green Mare'라는 제목으로 번역되어 큰 성공을 거둔 후, 그는 주로 아동 문학 및 장편소설, 단편집을 쓰는 데 주력했다. 1935년부터는 영화 대본을 쓰기 시작했다. 연극에서는 익살극인 Lucienne et le boucher, Clérambard (1949), 사형 제도를 비판한 Tête des autres(1952) 등의 작품으로 성공을 거두었다.

에메의 가장 유명한 단편 소설 중 하나는 《벽을 통과하는 남자》(프랑스어: Le Passe-muraille)이다. 작품의 주인공인 뒤티유엘(Dutilleul)은 42세가 되자 갑자기 자신에게 "벽을 아주 쉽게 통과할 수 있는 능력"이 있다는 사실을 알게 되었는데 처음에 그러한 능력은 그에게 즐거움을 주는 새로운 것이었지만 결국에는 뒤티유엘을 점점 더 사악한 것을 좇게 만드는 계기가 된다.
