마네킹 챌린지를 하는 요르단 대학교 공과대학생들

마네킹 챌린지(Mannequin Challenge)는 미국에서 시작된 바이럴 인터넷 비디오 트렌드이다. 영상이 재생되는 동안 사람들은 마네킹처럼 부동 자세를 유지한다. 이 때 보통 레이 스레머드의 곡 "Black Beatles"가 배경 음악으로 깔린다.[1][2]

트위터, 인스타그램 등 다수의 SNS에서 #MannequinChallenge라는 해쉬태그를 통해 급속도로 퍼지며 인기를 누렸다.

유행의 시초는 2016년 10월 미국 플로리다주 잭슨빌의 한 학생이 자신의 트위터 계정에 올린 영상으로 여겨진다.[1][3][4][5]

물론 이전에도 마네킹 챌린지가 있었다. 2008년 "Improv Everywhere"이라는 공연예술단이 그랜드 센트럴 터미널에서 "Frozen Grand Central"라는 즉흥 공연을 선보였다. 마네킹처럼 부동 자세를 유지하는 건 같으나, 이 때는 플래시 몹 형태로 벌어졌다.[6]
