뉴어크(영어: Newark)는 미국 동북부 뉴저지주에 있는 도시이다. 인구 277,140(2010). 뉴저지주의 동북부, 에식스군의 군청소재지이며, 뉴욕의 위성 도시이다. 뉴저지주 내의 최대 도시이며, 뉴욕의 위성 도시 중에서도 인구가 가장 많다. 뉴욕의 맨해튼, 스태튼아일랜드와 접하는 뉴어크 만에 면하는 항구 도시이다.
1666년 건설되었으며, 18세기 후반부터 각종 공업이 발달하면서 그 이름이 널리 알려지게 되었다. 뉴욕의 발전과 함께 이 도시로 크게 발전하였고, 항구도 정비되어 뉴욕 항의 역할을 분담하게 되었다. 지금도 다양한 종류의 제조업이 발달되어 있다. 한편 이 도시에서 미국에서 보험회사가 가장 먼저 창설되어 보험의 도시로도 알려져 있으며, 특히 푸르덴셜 보험이 유명하다.
뉴욕의 맨해튼과는 허드슨강의 수저(水底) 터널로 연결되어[1]여러 개의 철도, 지하철, 버스노선이 수시로 운행되어 교통이 편리하다. 이 도시에 있는 뉴어크 리버티 국제공항은 존 F. 케네디 국제공항, 라과디어 공항(이상 뉴욕 4공항)과 함께 뉴욕을 대표하는 중요한 공항이다.
그러나 이 도시는 주변에 또다시 많은 위성도시가 생기면서, 생활여건이 악화되었다. 이로 인하여 백인들은 이 도시를 떠나게 되었고, 흑인 인구의 비중이 높아져서 주민 중 절반 이상이 흑인이다. 인종 문제도 심각하여, 1967년에는 대규모 흑인폭동이 일어나기도 했다. 범죄도 빈발하여, 미국의 도시 중에서 범죄율이 상당히 높은 위험한 도시로 알려져 있다.
이와 같이 생활여건의 악화와 범죄로 어려움을 겪고 있으나, 이 도시는 뉴저지 주의 최대도시로 예로부터 다양한 문화시설을 갖추고 있어 뉴욕 교외의 중요한 중심지로서의 지위를 유지하고 있다. 주립 럿거스 대학교, 가톨릭계 사립 시턴홀 대학교는 높은 연구 성과로 유명하며, 여러 개의 도서관과 박물관도 있다.
뉴어크를 연고로 하는 프로스포츠팀으로 NHL 아이스하키의 뉴저지 데블스가 있다.

국제적 관계[편집]
뉴저지의 대부분 총영사관은 400 마켓가에 모여있다.[25] 뉴어크의 포르투갈 총영사관은 원 리버프론트 플라자의 뉴어크 리갈 센터에 위치해있다.[26] 콜롬비아 총영사관은 550 브로드가에 있다.[27] 이탈리아의 부영사관은 1 게이트웨이 센터에 있는데, 2014년까지 경제적인 이유로 문이 닫혀 있었다.[28][29][30]
