DJ 섀도(DJ Shadow, 조시 데이비스, Joshua Paul "Josh" Davis, 1972년 6월 29일~ )[1] 는 미국의 디스크자키이자, 턴테이블리스트, 음악 제작자 겸 작곡가이다. 그는 인스트루멘탈 힙합의 성장에 있어 중요한 인물로 고려된다 . 첫 앨범 Endtroducing..... 발매로 처음 주목 받았다. 여러 앨범의 샘플을 믹스하여 완전히 다른 음악으로 만들어낸 획기적인 앨범으로 대단한 평가를 받았다.[2]

생애

DJ Shadow 의 음악 경력은 KDVS 라는 캘리포니아 대학 데이비스 캠퍼스의 라디오 스테이션 디스크 자키로 시작되었다. 이 기간 동안 그는 캘리포니아의 Solesides 라는 음반 회사에서 주력한 실험적인 힙합 스타일 성장에 중요한 역할을 했다. 그 음반 회사에서의 In Flux와 Lost and Found (S.F.L.) 을 포함한 그의 초반 음악은 락, 힙합, 환경소리, 재즈, 소울, 버림 받은 레코드가 다 섞였다. 그의음악의 스타일은 특징 짓기 어려우나 갱스터 랩에 대체 음악으로 중요했다. Kurtis Mantronik, Steinski 와 Prince Paul은 그의 샘플 조합 스타일에 영향을 받았다고 했다. 가사는 지나치게 한정시킨다고 하여 그의 음악에은 목소리가 거의 없다. [3].

이전 Hollywood Records 란 음반회사에서 몇몇의 오리지널 작품을 발매했음에도 불구하고 그의 Mo' Wax 라는 음반회사와 계약한 후에야 그의 음악은 원숙해지기 시작했다. 마침내 1999년에 Quannum Projects 라는 회사를 만들었다.

또한 DJ Shadow 는 많은 뮤지션들과 작업을 같이 했다. (뒤에 부분적인 리스트 있음) 2006년에 유니버설 레코드와 계약을 했다.

중요 작품

Endtroducing.....

DJ Shadow가 1996년에 완성한 작품, Endtroducing....., 은 광대한 갈채속에 발매되었다. 2001년에 Endtroducing은 기네스북에 "First Completely Sampled Album" (처음 샘플 만으로 만든 앨범)으로 기록되었다. DJ Shadow가 이 앨범을 내기 위해 집을 팔았다는 유명한 일화가 있다.

Preemptive Strike 와 Psyence Fiction

1998년에 싱글 모음집 "Preemptive Strike" 을 발매했다. 동년에, DJ Shadow는 U.N.K.L.E.에서 데뷔 앨범 Psyence Fiction를 제작했다. Ian Brown, Radiohead의 Thom Yorke, Richard Ashcroft, Beastie Boys의 Mike D 같은 게스트를 참여시켰다.

Dark Days

2000년도 쯤 그는 영국 제작자Marc Singer가 영화화 한 다규멘터리Dark Days를 위한 영화음악을 만들었다. 이 영화는 각종 경쟁에서 6개의 상을 거머 쥐었다.[4]

The Private Press, 스크래치 (Scratch), Six Days

데뷔 앨범 후 거의 6년이 지난 2002년 6월에야 그는 두 번째 솔로 앨범인 The Private Press를 발매했다. 같은 해에 DVD로 나온 영화 Scratch에 출현했다. 또한, Six Days의 뮤직비디오가 2002년에 나왔다.

In Tune and On Time

2004년에 In Tune and On Time라는 런던 라이브 DVD가 발매되었다.

The Outsider

앨범 The Outsider는 2006년 9월 18일에 발매되었다. 샌프란 시스코의 여러 뮤지션들이 The Outsider' 의 앨범 작업에 참여하였다. [5] [6].

The Less You Know, The Better

2011년 10월 7일 정규 4집 The Less You Know, The Better가 발매되었다. Tom Vek, Talib Kweli, Little Dragon 등 다양한 뮤지션들이 참여하였다.

Reconstructed : The Best Of DJ Shadow

2012년 09월 26일 데뷔 20주년 기념 베스트앨범 Reconstructed : The Best Of DJ Shadow가 발매되었다.
