중세 영어

중세 영어(中世英語)는 고중세시대와 중세말기시대 동안의 영어 역사 단계이다. 더 구체적으로 말하자면 11세기 말부터 15세기 말에 이르는 4세기 경이다.

구조

명사

초기 현대 영어 낱말 engel(angel)과 name(name)은 두 가지 패턴을 보인다:

동사

일반적인 규칙으로 현재형의 경우 1인칭에서는 -e가 끝에 오고("ich here" - "I hear"), 2인칭의 경우 -(e)st가 오며("þou spekest" - "thou speakest"), 3인칭의 경우 -eþ가 온다("he comeþ" - "he cometh/he comes"). (Þ는 "think"의 th처럼 소리가 나지 않는다)

과거형의 경우 약변화동사에는 -ed(e), -d(e) 또는 -t(e)가 끝에 온다. 과거분사에서는 이 과거형 이전에 고대 영어의 ge-에서 비롯하는 i-, y-, 또 가끔은 bi-로 끝나는 경우도 있다.

이와 반대로 강변화동사는 현대 영어의 불규칙 동사처럼(이를테면 binden -> bound) 어간의 모음을 변화시켜 과거형을 형성한다.

1390년대에 제프리 초서가 쓴 캔터베리 이야기의 서막부이다.

중세 영어 원본: Whan that Aueryłł wt his shoures soote, The droghte of Marcħ, hath perced to the roote; And bathed euery veyne in swich lycour, Of which vertu engendred is the flour; Whan zephirus eek wt his sweete breeth, Inspired hath in euery holt and heeth; The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne, Hath in the Ram, his half cours yronne; And smale foweles, maken melodye, That slepen al the nyght with open iye; So priketh hem nature, in hir corages, Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrymages; And Palmeres for to seeken straunge strondes, To ferne halwes, kouthe in sondry londes; And specially, from euery shyres ende, Of Engelond to Caunterbury they wende; The holy blisful martir for to seke, That hem hath holpen whan þt they weere seeke.
