제임스 맥어보이(James McAvoy, /ˈmækəvɔɪ/, 1979년 4월 21일(1979-04-21))는 스코틀랜드의 배우이다. 맥어보이는 1995년 《The Near Room》을 통해 데뷔했고, 2000년대 말까지 텔레비전 출연이 주를 이뤘다. 널리 알려진 텔레비전 작품으로 드라마 《스테이트 오브 플레이 》, 성인 코미디 드라마 《셰임리스》, 공상 과학 드라마 《듄의 후예들》이 있다. 스크린 연기 이외에도 맥어보이는 《Three Days of Rain》 (2009), 《맥베스의 비극》 (2013)과 같은 연극 무대에도 올랐다. 또한 2011년 애니메이션 영화 《노미오와 줄리엣》과 《아더 크리스마스》에서 더빙을 맡았다.

2003년 맥어보이는 제레미 우딩 감독이 셰익스피어의 《로미오와 줄리엣》을 재구성한 영국, 인도 합작 영화 《발리우드 퀸》에 주연으로 출연했다. 이를 계기로 2005년 《나니아 연대기: 사자, 마녀, 그리고 옷장》에 조연 미스터 툼누스로 출연했다. 2006년에는 캐빈 맥도널드의 드라마 《라스트 킹》에 출연해 여러 시상식에서 후보로 지명되었다. 2007년에는 로맨틱 드라마 전쟁 영화 《어톤먼트》에 출연해 평론가들로부터 극찬을 받음과 함께 골든 글로브상 후보, 두 번째 BAFTA 후보로 지명되었다. 2008년에는 액션 스릴러 영화 《원티드》에 안젤리나 졸리와 대립하는 역할로 출연했다.

초기 삶과 가족[편집]

맥어보이는 스코틀랜드 글래스고에서 정신과 간호사인 엘리자베스와 건축업자인 제임스 맥어보이 시니어 사이에서 태어났다.[3][4] 어린 시절 로마 가톨릭교를 믿고 자랐다.[5] 부모님들은 일곱 살때 이혼했는데, 당시 힘들었다고 한다.[3][4] 건강이 좋지 못한 어머니는 맥어보이를 글래스고 드럼채플 근처의 연립 임대주택에서 살고 있던 부모님 마리와 버쳐 제임스 존스톤에게 보내는 것이 좋다고 판단했고, 이후 맥어보이는 외할아버지와 외할머니 손에서 자라게 되었다.[3][6] 어머니는 드럼채플에 가끔씩 들렸다.[4] 맥어보이 역시 배우가 된 이후에도 주기적으로 외조부모님을 만나러 갔다.[3] 형제자매로는 여동생 조이 맥어보이와 의붓형제 도날드가 있다.[3][4] 아버지와는 어릴 때 이후로 연락하지 않는다고 한다.[4] 맥어보이는 글래스고의 조단힐에 있는 성 토마스 아퀴나스 스쿨이라는 가톨릭 계통 학교를 다녔으며, 실제로 가톨릭교 사제가 될 생각까지 하고 있었다.[7][8] 2006년 인터뷰에서 그가 신부가 되고 싶었던 이유 중 하나는 자유롭게 여행을 하고 싶었기 때문이라고 한다.[9] 가톨릭 학교를 다니는 동안 지역 제과점에서 일했다.[7][8]

원티드 이후[편집]

In Robert Redford's historical American drama The Conspirator, McAvoy played the role of an idealistic war hero who reluctantly defends a co-conspirator charged in the Abraham Lincoln assassination. It premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.[59] While this movie garnered mixed reception, critics lauded the actor for his work. In Owen Gleiberman's assessment of The Conspirator, he found it "stiff-jointed" and tedious, but regarded McAvoy as "an avid presence".[60] In mid-2010, McAvoy was cast as telepathic superhero Professor X, leader and founder of the X-Men, in X-Men: First Class.[61] He joined an ensemble that included Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Kevin Bacon. Based on the Marvel Comics and a prequel to the film series, it is set primarily during the Cuban Missile Crisis and focuses on the relationship between Professor X and Magneto and the origin of their groups. McAvoy admitted that he was not familiar with the comics as a child, but was a fan of the cartoons since the age of 10.[62] Released to the UK on 1 June, First Class topped its box office with ticket sales of around £5 million in its opening weekend.[63] First Class was also reviewed favourably.[64] In 2011, McAvoy began filming the role of Max Lewinsky in the British thriller, Welcome to the Punch.[65] He played the lead role in the Danny Boyle film, Trance.

In 2012, McAvoy was cast as Bruce Robertson in Filth, an adaptation of an Irvine Welsh novel of the same name. The film's ensemble cast includes Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Eddie Marsan, and Imogen Poots. For his role, McAvoy won Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards in December 2013.[66] It was also announced that he would co-star with Jessica Chastain in a double-feature film project, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.[67] He performed the male lead in radio play adaptation of Neverwhere written by Neil Gaiman.[68][69]

McAvoy starred in Shakespeare's Macbeth on London's West End in early 2013. Macbeth was the first performance at the Trafalgar Transformed, running from 9 February until 27 April. The production was directed by Jamie Lloyd who also directed McAvoy in his last stint on the stage in 2009's Three Days of Rain.[70] McAvoy reprised his role as Professor X in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and is scheduled to do so again in X-Men: Apocalypse.[71]

McAvoy dated Scottish actress Emma Nielsen (stage name Emma King) for six years until 2003.[72] While working on Shameless, McAvoy started a relationship with his character's love interest, Anne-Marie Duff.[73] When they first began dating, McAvoy and Duff agreed not to speak to the press about their relationship.[72][74][75] He married Duff on 18 October 2006 in a quiet ceremony.[73][75] When asked by Ryan Seacrest, during his radio show, if he wished he had waited longer to get married so he could exploit his fame better, McAvoy replied that he had married the woman of his dreams. "The world seemed less scary.... And I started to like myself a little bit more."[40]

They have one child together, a son named Brendan (b. 2010).[76] In interviews, the actor has opted not to discuss his son and have not announced their child's birth date, although he has stated "the little man" keeps him up at night.[77] McAvoy leads what has been called a modest life. Prior to marrying Duff, he purchased a second floor flat in North London in 2006 for about £178,000. Also, he and his wife drive a 1990s Nissan Micra that is worth less than £1,000.[78] The couple enjoy a close relationship and rarely leave their flat, choosing to instead read or do sudoku puzzles together. Of this lifestyle, the actor said it is "mundane, and I love it that way".[3]

After McAvoy won an award from the BAFTAs, his estranged father spoke to the Sunday Mirror, stating that he would love to get in touch with his son, but did not know how to reach him. Though the actor did not read the piece, he heard about it and was unmoved.[4] He enjoys fantasy themes which he said started from the age of 11 with The Lord of the Rings.[79] His big interest outside acting and science fiction is football; he is a huge fan of Celtic Football Club, stating that his dream role would be to play Celtic legend Jimmy Johnstone.[80] McAvoy considers himself a spiritual person who no longer practices Catholicism.[8] Speaking to Sky News, McAvoy said he believed that British filmmakers belittle and dumb down their productions to please American audiences. "It's like we're patronising them and short changing ourselves," the actor commented.[81] He had previously called 3-D films a "waste of money", accusing film studios of using the effect to get more money out of their theatre audiences.[82] McAvoy has stated that The Goonies (1985) is his favourite film.[83][84]

Charity[편집]

At one point, McAvoy did a "terrifying" BASE jump from the world's tallest hospital building in a bid to help raise money for Ugandan children's charity Retrak, an organisation which assists children on the streets.[85] Additionally, McAvoy is a celebrity supporter of the British Red Cross with whom he travelled to Uganda to raise awareness of the projects there. He had become involved with the charity after shooting The Last King of Scotland there for several months and was shocked by what he saw.[86] In February 2007, he visited northern Uganda and spent four days seeing projects supported by the British Red Cross.[87]
