김빛내리 박사는 microRNA의 생성 경로를 밝힌 것으로 가장 잘 알려져 있다. 2002년에 microRNA의 생성에 대한 새로운 이론을 제시하였고, 이어 microRNA의 생성인자인 드로셔 (Drosha), DGCR8, RNA 전사효소 II, PACT 등을 동정하였다. 김 박사의 연구는 microRNA를 통한 유전자 및 세포 조절을 이해하는 데에 크게 기여하였고, RNA간섭 기술을 발전시키는 데 큰 역할을 하였다. 또한 배아줄기세포에서 만들어져 줄기세포 유지를 도와주는 microRNA를 발견하였으며, 줄기세포에서 microRNA가 어떻게 조절되는지를 밝힘으로써, 줄기세포의 유전자 조절에 대한 이해를 넓혔다. 암세포의 성장과 사멸을 조절하는 microRNA를 발견하여 암생물학의 발전에도 기여하였다.

김빛내리 박사는 1998년 옥스퍼드 대학에서 박사학위를 수여받았으며, 박사학위과정에서는 레트로바이러스를 이용한 유전자치료법을 개발하였다. 이후 미국 펜실바니아대학에서 박사후연구원으로서 일하면서, 스플라이싱과 RNA 분해를 이어주는 연결고리인 Y14의 기능을 밝혔다. 2001년 서울대에 부임한 후 microRNA 연구를 시작으로 RNA를 통한 유전자 조절을 연구하고 있다. 2010년 국가과학자로 선정되었고 현재 서울대 중견석좌 교수로 근무하고 있다.
